A $10 or so speculator ripple on top of a $125 or so 'base price' is neither here nor there.

I find myself thinking about this, well my grandparents had a war to win, my parents had a country to rebuild, and I have this. What worries me is ours might be the first of these 3 generations to fail in the task given it...

It sure will!!

The only thing I'm lacking is a pedal generator and battery capacity, the former shouldn't be a problem and for the latter I can always nick some of the ones running my house.

Everyone should bring an mp3 player/ipod thingy to ensure a good choice of tunes!

Plot oil the same chart and the petrol/diesel curve would be almost flat.

4/6d a gallon when I were a lad.

That would be about 5p per litre in new-fangled money - but money isn't what it used to be. Motoring is much more affordable now.
