the frack thread

How will oil depletion affect the way we live? What will the economic impact be? How will agriculture change? Will we thrive or merely survive?

Resilience: Death of a Shale Gas Salesman
His controversial rise in the fracking world and his violent end mirrored the volatile and often destructive character of the North American shale gas gamble. He symbolized the excesses of the shale gas industry and its brute force accomplice, hydraulic fracturing.

The high-energy, optimistic entrepreneur gambled everything in the bust-and-boom WE ARE DODGY of unconventional, high-risk hydrocarbons. For a short time, he outran the looming realities of a growing debt load, bad land deals and an underperforming technology.

But ultimately, debt -- all that money borrowed for risky shale gas gambles -- threw the former accountant and landman into the middle of a Shakespearean tragedy with the usual ingredients of ambition, greed and waste.

McClendon lived the American dream long enough to encounter its sister nightmare. He seized an opportunity, conquered nature and gained and lost a fortune.

More disappointing than that, the BBC didn't mention climate change!

Good news from Scotland:

Oil Price: Scotland bans fracking, forever

You do have to wonder what planet some politicians originated from
Maurice Golden, a newly elected member of parliament for the Conservative party, argued in favor of fracking, and said the “leftwing cabal” of the three united liberal parties had been “ignoring” scientific evidence regarding the practice, which, if allowed, would add jobs and boost the economy
There appears to be daylight between Maurice Golden's ears

For how long do half witted idiots like Golden, (and Cameron, Osbourne and many other half wits) think the economy can "grow"? The UK is over populated, and has a deficit of about half the food that's needed. The longer time there is before the crash, the greater the impact will be.

Forever. Because they actually BELIEVE in Mainstream economists who spout this drivel. Even though economics has been debunked as it is based on numerous assumptions that have been disproved. But they don't want to shatter the illusion...

They (and most other people) chant "we have to build more houses and grow more food to feed a growing population".

No you haven't you idiot. What you have to do is address the problem and sort out the population growth. If you don't, matters will be taken out of your hands and the pain will be unimaginable, and there will be no ecosystems left to allow humans a sustainable existence.

(I can dream can't I?}

May is showing her colours as firmly in the pocket of the corporations like her predecessor, with a touch of Thatcherite 'capitalism for the people' otherwise known as straight bribes to to acquiesce to environmental vandalism.

Forever is a long time.
A permanent ban is just a piecrust promise. Easy to make and just as easy to break when times get hard.
To avoid fracking long term they need to put into place cleaner alternatives that are actually meeting the needs of the people.

The scottish government does not really have to worry about the Scottish gross budget as that is really set at the UK level. Hence they can always whinge about the UK government.

Here's a interesting take on fracking in the US:
https://srsroccoreport.com/the-death-of ... r-the-u-s/

Seems both the Bakkan (-25%) and Eagle Ford (-40%) fields are well down from their recent peaks but the real kicker is the economics. Bakkan has had very few net positive cash flow months such that they have managed to cumulate a negative -$32bn over the last seven years!
...the U.S. Shale Oil Industry was a house-of-cards. Readers who have been following my work, based on intelligent work of others, understood that Shale Oil is just another Ponzi Scheme in a long list of Ponzi Schemes.
