edit: The great Michael Fish storm of 1987 had a low pressure of 953mb - This 966 really is quite unusual.

Today we may well have a record breaking storm. An exceptionally deep depression north-west of Scotland is producing hurricane cat1 winds of over 100mph.

I love the descriptor 'phenomenal'

Valid for Thurs 24th November from 14:00 hrs until Fri 25th November 13:00 hrs.

An EXTRATROPICAL deep low pressure will develop and deepen in the Atlantic several hundred miles west out in the sea moving far North East between Iceland and the West Of Scotland. Pressure is expected at 943mb at 01:00hrs 25th Nov. This is now been updated to a CSW.

This type of low is rare and dangerious with windspeeds above 100mph out in the sea. West and North Scotland will see 70mph gusts across the Iles and Mainland. It is expected that gales will reach North and West England, Ilse of Man and Northern Ireland. Higher gusts are possible as this Cyclone moves further North into Friday morning. Shetland and near areas are also under this warning with gusts of 80mph.

Mountins of Scotland will see wintery showers to start then snow / blizzards. Hail and snow is possible at lower levels est 300 meters. Squally conditions also a factor for all mentioned areas.

Sea conditions will be DANGERIOUS F12.

Expect damage to property and life.

Dunno if it's a record for our part of the world but I've not seen 944 on pressure map before.

Winds have been well over 100mph on Cairngorm this evening.

The second storm on Saturday/Sunday, whilst not so intense, will bring very windy weather to much of Britain.

Transferring so much energy from the tropics to the poles is a noisy business.

Blame it on the jet stream! How about blaming it on people burning fossil fuels? That jet stream didn't just drop in of it's own accord.

Yup, its a'blowin' between Scotland and Iceland.

I haven't seen that much bright colour on one of these maps for ages. Not since the last gales in fact.

It's a good job that it's not blowing from the North or it would be bringing a smidgen of snow to the whole country not just the Highlands.

While it's windy over here next to the Atlantic, it's just what we're used to. In fact, the year so far has been much calmer, wind-wise, than usual.

Maybe, like rain, it's going to make up the average all at once.
