UK emissions cuts 'meaningless' without global deal

Post by Aurora »

The Guardian - 11/01/10

Action in the UK to cut greenhouse gas emissions could be rendered "meaningless" if a global deal on tackling climate change is not secured, a committee of MPs warned today.

But the Environmental audit committee urged the government to cut emissions more quickly at home – to prove to other countries Britain was serious about backing up its attempts to get an international agreement with action.

But decent UK cuts of greenhouse gas emissions make a global deal on tackling climate change more likely to be secured. That's not meaningless!

I think the UK has a lot to offer in all this: we started it, we've got a voice with at least two big blocs (EU and Commonwealth) and everybody's heard of us. I know that sounds a bit trivial, but it's a good start if you want to get a message across.

We also have a lot to lose if CC goes on...like most of East Anglia for a start. Actually we should join the Assoc of Small Island Nations if you ask me.
