Extreme commuting: How far would you go?

Our transport is heavily oil-based. What are the alternatives?

Extreme commuting: How far would you go?

Post by Quintus »

For me it'll be about 90 minutes and 25 miles. Work is work, glad to have any.
Extreme commuting: How far would you go?

What sort of distance would you be prepared to travel to work – 10 miles, 20, 30? What about 300? With average journey lengths firmly on the rise, meet the extreme commuters who are on course to clock up more than a dozen circumnavigations of the globe by the time they retire

Out the conservatory door, keep left of rosebed, then bear right across lawn, into shed door. 15 yards.

I used to do through the living room, across the hall, and into the office :D

When I lived in overcrowded, full of traffic Berkshire, the breakfast bar in the kitchen was within a few feet of the office door!

When I had a proper job, the most I did was 20 miles, and that was only for 3 months!

My office is next to the living room, and when working outside it is right on my doorstep.
People say things like "You are really lucky not having to put up with rush hour traffic" and the like.
Luck has sod all to do with it. I designed it that way. I hardly ever have to leave the property to earn a crust.
As far as I am concerned, if you have to commute, you need a better plan.

Or a better boss.
I was perfectly able to tele-commute at the one position because we had a team working in bangalore doing similar work (though lower down the totem pole than me). When I asked to work from home for a few weeks I was told that there was no work that could be done remotely.
I asked "how about our team in bangalore".
"Our position is we have no work that could be done remotely."

I reckon that higher up managers would have nothing to do if they couldn't invite people to meetings all day.

For a moment I thought you were talking about this:

For daily commutes I limited myself to 55 minutes each way.

However I have also done years of weekly air commutes, UK <-> Germany.

And as for general work based air travel to client sites ... sheesh ...

However I now commute .... 0.5 mile.

4080 km, lived in Lafayette Louisiana, worked in Edmonton Alberta.

Once I got to Edmonton, longest commute to a drill rig from Edmonton Alberta was 1000 km.

90 minutes is my limit, and I've done it in three different jobs in three very different venues. After 90 minutes you run into injury time...

I've done up to about 70 miles for a few months on a few occaisons. I would never travel that far on an open ended basis.

These days it is 4 miles each way, just enough to keep me fit on the bike.

I had a long distance girl friend for a few years. That resulted in a high carbon footprint.
