Shun meat, says UN climate chief

Post by Aurora »

BBC News - 07/09/08

People should consider eating less meat as a way of combating global warming, says the UN's top climate scientist.

Rajendra Pachauri, who chairs the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), will make the call at a speech in London on Monday evening.

UN figures suggest that meat production puts more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than transport.

on a vegetarian diet my own personal methane production sky-rockets. Has there any been any conclusive research done on the effects of emissions by 7 billion people eating cabbage and baked beans?

Probably not as much methane as that emitted by the cows needed to keep 7 billion people supplied with beef. Er... probably.

Actually, the human methane production probably matches that of the cows that are no needed when people switch to veg diet.

The amount of methane is most likely related to processing vegetable stuff in our or cows stomachs into material useful to a body - similar to decomposing. (After all that's where anaerobic digesters get their methane from). So you either get a cow to do it for you or you do it yourself!

By the way, cows raised exclusively on grass apparently produce 'only' 40% of the methane that cows raised on corn produce. So go for organic, grass fed beef (like ours)
What a shame, seemed quite promising, this human species.

Hmmm, talk about stereotypes.

Been 100% vegan diet for years with no major farting problems, unlike some stinkers I know whose bowels barely move because of the rotting flesh they've consumed.

I'll give up meat when they ban flying and cars.

Methane is pretty harmless and odorless. Its the hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans from rotting meat that can make wallpapers crumble and children cry. Add a couple of beers to the meat and the exhausts are lethal.

Sounds like a pretty fair appraisal of my digestive system there MacG! You mean that it isn't like that for everyone!?

I'm not waiting till then. Not while there's worse things around that you can blame on dead animals and silly people.

Botulism
BSE
Listeria
Salmonella
e. coli
Clostridium perfringens
Alimentary toxic aleukia
Campylobacter
Staph
Trichinosis
etc
etc

Sort of the same thing. These days, most soya production goes to feed animals.
