If power cuts happen on Gordon Brown's watch, I'm sure the opposition will waste no time in making the connection with the last time power cuts hit Britain - again on Labour's watch.

Power cuts could mean a sure-fire victory for the Tories at the next election.

Hang on a minute - wasn't there an article not long ago about how Britain was awash with cheap gas since the pipe was opened with Norway?? It can't be both ways!

Awash, yes. There isn't a supply problem; imports through the Norwegian Langeled pipeline may be reduced at the moment, but UKCS production has been going up and so have imports through the BBL pipeline, and we have more storage capacity than last year and it's all nearly or completely full.

Cheap, no (although the spot price has fallen this week). Gas prices are going up throughout Europe because of the oil price. All good stuff as far as long term security goes - higher prices can only encourage better demand management and greater concentration on alternative sources.

"High oil prices are not going to go away: many in the energy industry now believe we have reached the point where demand for oil will exceed supply. This means supermarkets in their current form, with their long supply lines and 'just-in-time'delivery, cannot go on. It is therefore up to government, national and local, to ensure that local shops and supply lines are not undercut by supermarkets now, so that these other businesses are in a position to step in and provide our goods in the future."
