At the end of the day, this problem isn't to do with the mainstream public not trusting scientists to tell them "the truth." Just look at the advertising industry, which tries to promote anything/everything as "backed by the latest science", and just look at the level of fear that many mainstream people have about the power of "the people in white coats." The public knows perfectly well how powerful science is. No...the problem is just that a lot of people would prefer to find ways to ignore/refute information they don't like the sound of, regardless of the source. The very same people who will spout anti-scientific nonsense when it comes to climate change and other ecological issues will quite happily use/quote science when it suits them to do so.
We must deal with reality or it will deal with us.
