Solar panels to be installed on Glastonbury roof

Post by Aurora »

Energy Saving Trust - 26/06/10

The largest private solar electricity scheme in the UK is to be hosted at Glastonbury.

Michael Eavis, the organiser of the festival, is planning on investing in 1,500 square metres of solar panels to cover the roofs of the barns at Worthy Farm.

According to the festival's official website, annually the renewable energy source will generate enough power to supply 40 homes.

Maybe the hippy dream is still alive after all.

It's taken long enough.

Ah, smeg.

Hate to be a party pooper, but will his solar panels offset against the hoards of numbchucks that drive the length of the country to wallow in shite for several days? Na.

The whole show is such a commercial enterprise now, millions of burgers and fries, artists flown in from around the globe...the light show must use the equivalent of a small town. See the pictures on TV? It is sprawling monstrosity accross the countryside. It is hiddeous.

I can't be the only one that thinks this way?

Also, I saw youtube clips from last year with the violence and stuff - peoples tents being burnt and power lines being pulled down into camp sites... it's a fecking disgrace compared to the gigs I used to go to way back in the day of love.

So, congrats Mr Eavis. Another multi millionaire who socks it to the kids. And I don't believe he is godlike just because he put the pyramid stage on laylines.

40 things you never knew about Glastonbury
30 megawatts of electricity are used by the festival weekend – around the same as the city of Bath.

I've been to Glasto a couple of times. It is damned good fun but it's really hypocritical the way they ram the idea that it's all 'green' down your throats when you're there. It's not, given that most people drive to the festival, there's all the catering trucks and food and drink to move on to the site, the musicians and their kit, all the side shows and stalls they've got, the portaloos, disposable pint cups (I think they made a song and dance out of them being made of corn starch but still not really sustainable) etc etc etc. The greenest thing to do would be to not have it! It's just a load of middle class twits on a guiltfest really.

Oh yeah, another amusing thing is the way it's got this aura of 'non-commerciality' around it, allegedly. That struck me as a bit of a non truth as well, given the Budweiser sponsorship and Orange sponsored chill out lounge thing, as well as the Graun's sponsorship and all sorts of shit musical acts like Coldplay and Lady GooGoo. At least they were spared U2 this year!

I went to Glasto in 1987...when it was still rather good. Just an unreconstructed Festival, 3 days with no sleep, lots of music, lots of mud and just HAVING to eat chocolate-cake at 3 a.m. and then discovering it wasn't just chocolate cake...I'm rather glad I haven't been recently.

I was also at Stonedhenge the year before it got abolished. Nothing to do with me mate honest...

Oh yes and you didn't have to be a stockbroker to afford the tickets and all.

The population of the festival is larger than Bath - so I expect per person electricity consumption if lower than if they had stayed at home.

Population of Bath = 98,000
Population of Pilton Festival = 100,000 ish.

I think this is lazy journalism. Has matched populations and assumed energy parity. Still an awful lot of juice burned at the festival. The generators are HUGE.

I always wonder what his land must be like? Full of dropped objects, rubbish and drugs. I'd be surprised if his cows don't spend half their time off their heads and with foot complaints.

Depends what else he's done and had done. If he's already insulated to the max and got cool light-bulbs etc, then why not?

Well if I'm free I will do it again but when we cleared up Glastonbury this year we didn't sort rubbish it all went into black sacks , I used a green sack now and then that I found on the field but I think maybe two other people did this now and then .

We were issued gloves and black sacks not green and everything got landfilled .
you have no idea the amount of alu cans glass bottles plastic bottles a 1160 acre site can hold .

So how much energy will these solar panels save how much was lost in one years landfilling of recyclable materials

Green pah but everywhere else I think is the same greenwash, every little helps as tesco says as it sell you everything wrapped in plastic and tells you not using plastic carrier bags will save the world .

yup glastonbury made me more sure we are doomed still love the place
