Dear friends,
Communities in Oro Province in Papua New Guinea have asked for international support against a World Bank loan for palm oil expansion. The World Bank has recently granted a new loan to expand oil palm production in two of the country’s provinces. Despite claims that the money will alleviate poverty and benefit local people, communities have condemned it as solely benefiting large plantation companies, such as Cargill, at the expense of communities and forests.
Already, oil palm is responsible for large-scale deforestation, increased poverty and malnutrition and violations of indigenous peoples’ rights in the country. Please go to

to add your signature to a letter written by Oro communities, which asks for the loan to be cancelled or to be changed so that it no longer goes towards palm oil.
Yours sincerely.
