As part of my treatment I am starting a restricted diet. Beer is out , along with most of my preferred foods. :(. However, port wine is fine. :)

Is that diet advised by the doctors, Ralph? Or your own initiative?

What can't you have to eat/drink, apart from beer?

Some notes here, nutrition being interesting.

And hey, the very best wishes to you and good luck for the future!

It is a very low fibre diet, for the most prosaic of reasons. The radiotherapy is very targeted, with three radiation beams overlapping carefully aligned to focus in the prostate. Unfortunately the prostate moves within the body in response to the digestive system, especially any flatulence in the gut. Hence the diet to eradicate farting. My current diet is a constant audible source of amusement to my daughters.

A family friend's dad was a doctor. His practice organised the distribution of 1/3-pint bottles of Stout to all expectant women patients. Stout is piled-high with B-vits of which the famed Folic Acid (which women nowadays take as supplements) is one.

And crikey... Stumuz???

It's only recently they've stopped  offering bottled Guinness alongside tea, coffee and Tatyos to blood donors (possibly to do with Ireland's already high alcohol consumption).

It's good to know that people are still lurking around the site even if they don't post.

Hope you're well, Stu. Good to hear that you're still around.

My prostate test results were a little ambiguous, the MRI is not clear if the cancer has spread to lymph nodes, which would reduce the probability of the 'cured' status. Next MRI in a couple of months might clarify. This is my last week in current employment, so I am facing a (maybe) temporary change of lifestyle and income status. The Guinness for blood option stopped in England many years ago - a brilliant bit of marketing whilst it lasted, along side Lucozade which was the health drink of choice for sick kids in the 70s

My blood donor days will probably be over now, even with full recovery. Ditto organ donor, if any were still in reusable condition.

A ruling on blood donations in Ireland came into force around 2002 and now this eligibility question rules me out:
Have you spent 12 months or more in total in the UK* between 1980 and 1996, including living, working or on holidays?

If "yes":

Because of the risk of variant CJD you cannot donate blood.

* UK includes Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

In this singular instance, they're serious. It's about time this limitation was re-investigated.

The big scare over vCJD in the UK was debunked years ago. There would be an epidemic of it now if there was any truth in the original thesis. Unless the press and NHS are covering something up? Is this a conspiracy theory that the Irish government believe in?

The original scare was justified on the data available at the time. Millions were exposed to the rogue prions in their diet and significant numbers of people were infected. There were concerns that a large numbers of people had a DNA subtype which would leave the disease latent in them for decades, leading to a long term health crisis. It now seems that the dominant subtype was not significantly at risk at all, and most of the people who were are now dead.

Time to lift the ban.

Are we reaching 'Peak Antibiotics'? I was surprised to hear GPs are still handing these out for colds and flu....
