Agreed, the Irish will have to get SF out of their system somehow, so they'll do well at the next election. However, for good or for bad, we have an excellent, moderate electoral system where one party rarely has the upper hand.

From this ignorant outsiders perspective, I would say that the electoral system in Ireland was deliberately crafted with verve and nuance, to disperse influence and power amongst as many groups as possible, whilst keeping the unelected power centre (the church) whole. It is something civil war Spain had the choice to do at about the same time in history. They chose poorly.

Understand Liz Truss has been informed by Graham Brady the traditional threshold of letters for a leadership challenge has been breached. But he is insisting on a threshold of half the parliamentary party before acting.

Even the majority of the Tory Party disagree or have have rowed back, never mind the country at large - just look at the polls...

Britain urgently needed disruptive approaches and policies to drive growth ??

Introducing and then withdrawing these disruptive policies have cost the country a minimum of £20 BILLION and counting....
Not to mention the increase in interest rates (which will kill investment), the increase in mortgage rates, the pension schemes that have been trashed, the 10% inflation and the cost of living crisis that will squeeze those already suffering at the bottom of society.....
Is that what Britain urgently needed ??

Does anyone else have any ideas on how the country can tax assets held abroad? No platitudes about international agreements they will never and have never stopped the wealthy avoiding tax in the UK.
The two examples of gold bars in Switzerland or living in the UK and disturbing the company profits in Ireland are very basic examples.

So Braverman has resigned (or been sacked, depending on the source), allegedly for a minor admin mistake. Not the real story - apparently she had a massive row with Truss last night "over visas", which we can assume means Truss wants to relax visa requirements to boost immigration and Braverman told her it was a really bad idea, and Braverman then found an excuse to get out of there. Rumour has it that she will be replaced by Schapps, who is a Hunt ally, so the right wingers are complaining about a Hunt coup. What an unbelievable shambles.

Reports that mps were physically manhandled to vote for the government on the fracking vote, and that the Tory chief whip has resigned, presumably over this issue, as it is basically the government falsifying a vote in parliament which it had earlier described as a vote of confidence in itself. This is not democracy it is blatant dictatorship

If it is a dictatorship then the dictator is Hunt, not Truss. He can pull the plug on her now any time he likes.

Both chief whip and deputy have resigned, apparently before the vote. A lot of tortes seem to have voted for the government believing it was still a vote of confidence, as this was withdrawn at the last minute in the chamber. The lobbies were chaos. This is no way to run a government.

It is no way to run a political party either. This situation is beginning to look like an existential threat to the tory party, and that is not something I've ever said before. I thought they would always pull themselves together eventually. But right now it looks like they all know Truss has got to go, but they simply cannot agree on a candidate for a "coronation", and the reasons they can't agree go right to the core of what the tory party stands for. Truss hasn't just killed her own premiership and the tory's chance of winning the next election -- she's actually killed the free-market-extremist ideology she attempted to implement. This situation could yet get much more messy and insane than it currently is. They cannot fix this while in power, and therefore cannot remain in power for the next 2 years, and yet the lower they go in the polls the crazier it might seem to call an election.
