Hemp is not the best solution for walls, it is A solution. In fact it is one of many solutions. It has a disadvantage in many situations because of the thickness necessary to get a high insulation value. To get to the optimum U value of circa 0.12 for a wall, even a ready insulated cavity wall, you would have to build a foundation to take the thickness of hemp/lime necessary. With a fibre board, even a hemp fibre board, which are readily available but without the lime, you could bolt the board to the wall and render over to finish without the necessity of a properly founded dwarf wall support.

There are horses for courses in every situation and I wish people would recognise this instead of saying hemp/strawbale/sheepswool/whatever is THE answer.

It's going to be hard work persuading most people that there are no one size fits all solutions any more. It means they will have to think, rather than copy the latest fashion.
