howdy all , well an interesting thread , and i am NOT going to get into who is right and wrong about religion or even if it has any relevance to the subject at hand other to say that the biggest threat to this planet is the "religion" of materialism - and you can take that any ways you like
as to "preparations" - well as an older person with maybe if i am lucky ?? 16,425 days left on this rock ( assuming i make 100 years - yea right given my medical status - and "do I REALLY want to live that long ?? ") - my attitude is to watch the goings on in the world , not the BS spouted by the politicos and media , but whats happening around me and interpolate it globally - which basically is that most people are obsessed with material things - want want want - and only consider themselves in the main , care little for their fellow man
and if the proverbial hit the fan ,would slit your throat for a can of beans - that of course was after they all sat there wringing their hands blaming everyone for their ills and lack of awareness
so to this end I do what i can - solar for emergency lighting - rainwater scavenging - sensible stocks of food and other stuff ( but not panicking stocks ) - and keeping a low profile ( yea i am one of those people in society that no one notices ) - don't drive now so no great demand for oil other than a can of lubricant for the mobility scooter ( yey - go electric transport ) - have insulated the house as best as i can /can afford , and basically live a fairly minimalist lifestyle -so don't need holidays and the trappings of our materialistic society in the main - and could if needs be live without TV, the Internet, etc ( rather not mind - but if needs must )
so not lucky enough to have any land to go self sufficient - but then again if the worst came to worst would that be a a "liability "?? as don't you think that those without would want what you may have ?? - and do any of you who have it seriously think some scrote or gang of scrotes who at the moment leach on society in other ways would not decide you had no right to it ??
so in all yep prepare ( well have the ability to survive short term panics ) - but in the long run ?? - well guess if its my day to go ( and we ALL have one folks ) - then so be it
guess we all ( or should ) become more fatalistic as we get older - and worrying too much will do no good - I have survived thus far , and seen off quite a few "doomsday " scenarios in my time here , ya know , the cold war , the millennium , YK2, etc etc - and had several near misses during my time in the fire service - so look at it this way - what tomorrow will bring - no one knows - all we can do is take sensible precautions against basic threats to life and the rest ?? - well trust in what ever deity you want if you are that way inclined - and if not - just to "dumb" luck
well its worked for me thus far
nice to meet you all and look forward to some interesting discussions

I voted 1 because I have bought a ruined farm in Spain and intend to retire there as soon as I can and become as self sufficient as I can.
BUT
I had already bought the place before I found out about peak oil so I don't know if that counts. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time.
However
I am going to take early retirement as I get a lump sum on retirement and I'm not sure that it will be there in a few years time. This I am doing purely because of Peak Oil. I believe the world will collapse financially in the next few years if not this one.
