Thanks for understanding my frustrations! Mike has taken pictures and we have filed a police report. They called it Criminal Damage which made it sound nice and serious.
and yes, we are keeping lots of details!

Sorry to hear your wood has disrupted. Although you have probably already done this but make sure you get a crime reference number for the criminal damage and not an incident reference number or URN in some forces
The difference it can make to future police response can be great.
When the police attend an incident or take a statement and conduct an investigation this becomes a Recordable Crime. Where they merely take a report, record the crime and issue an incident number or URN but do none of the above they have no need to record it as a recordable crime, thus, according to the Home office and government there has been no crime!
There is great pressure on the lower echelons by inspectors and above to use these non recordable incident numbers to keep local crime stats down.
So if you have a recordable crime ref no and so does your neighbour and assuming there has been no crime in your wood before there will be a 200% increase in crime in that beat area, which will get quarterly graphs and data sets going the wrong way.
So if this sort of thing happens again,doh, 400% increase, until it is showing up as a mini crime wave.

I must admit I thought you of you when this happened! With a smile on my face.
We do hope that we will not have to go down the route of CCTV or anything, we think it is someone with a grudge against the split woods and so we are building relationships in the area. We understand their concerns, and hope to be able to work with people rather than lock them out....we can try!
But, you are right, it isn't nice!
We are going there now, hopefully meet some folks and see how things are.

Well, today was good - between us we came up with a cunning plan for a collapsible shelter, that we can quickly let down over our stuff when we leave, and pull up again when we get back. Full details and pictures on the blog: http://peplers.blog.co.uk/
We also met with one of our neighbours at the wood - we got his name, address and email from the council website, where he'd objected to a retrospective planning application for a shed in another part of the wood. (This was rejected, and rightly so in this case I think...). Surprising how your details get out onto the Internet isn't it...
Anyway, he turned out to be a really nice chap, and also a tree surgeon. He seemed really pleased that we had taken the time to call round, and we walked round the wood with him, telling him our plans and chatting about forestry in general. He's going to mention to other people he knows that he's met us and we're OK...
It seems that any possible suspicion or vindictiveness in cases like ours evaporates once we have a face and a name - as long as we're nice and are looking after the woods! Both of our neighbours that we've now met are really nice, yet I know they have also both been involved in objecting to planning applications in another part of the wood (justifiably).
Seems the moral of the story is to make friends with the neighbours and discuss your plans before doing them, and modify them if need be! This was our plan all along, but maybe we should have pushed a bit harder to get to know people quickly...

Well, the good has been that we have met more people and we have tidied up! Now our main site looks ordered and woodlandy. We cleared out a lot of things that 'could be useful' into our garage where they cannot cause offence to others and our main site looks good now.
We are meeting up with a local woodsman today, and are exctited about that as he will be a great help.
