Which is why we're now boiling the acorns up at our coppice, over a wood fire. That way you get to be outdoors and playing with a fire at the same time! But it did strike me how inefficient it seems. However, I hear the nutritional value of acorns is so high that in ancient times people still went to all this trouble because it was worth it for the food.

The original hunter gatherers in this country didn't have a problem with cooking fuel. They just reached out a grabbed a handful of wood fuel. When TSHTF some people are going to have to travel a very long way for their fuel or pay through the nose for it. It's going to be an advantage to live in the country, I feel. City dweller, raw food, rural dweller, cooked food?

Personally I think the best thing you can do with acorns is to convert them into Jamon Serrano - preferably via a free range Pata Negra pig in a cork oak forest in Northern Spain. Acorn fed pig is the dogs bollox as far as flavour is concerned.

Squirrels have already stripped all the hazel trees round here. I managed a huge hargvest of 10 nuts last weekend. I shall have to start eating squirrel instead.
