In primary school geography they taught how Oil was formed so it made sense that it would run out one day i.e peak oil.

Using solar energy as it arrives here is no problem, it's using stored solar energy that's the problem. Burning fossil fuels as they're made would probably be fine!

Hello. I clicked on a link to introduce myself to the community and I took me to this discussion on Peak Oil. Is this right?

Anyway hello to everyone, my name is David and I have an interest in raising awareness of environmental issues to the UK public and hopefully get more people to buy into a sustainable future. I know I had heard about the possibility of peak oil years ago when I was at school (I have been for over 10 years now) but it was author George Monbiot that really highlighted the issue to me.

Hi Greendave.

Welcome to the land of little hope and despair. The process of realisation is a long one and almost everybody on this site has been through it. The first step is the learning process where you hear about how energy and the economy is spiraling down the drain and what processes are at work. Not only Peak Oil but exponential growth, Population growth, food availability, water shortages and environmental problems etc... This points you in the direction of catastrophic collapse of the human race and inevitably onto the alternatives to solves the worlds problems such as alternative energies, efficiency drives, alternative lifestyles etc.. They are all listed on this site and have been discussed in depth

After a while you while the hope you have of there being a bright and pleasant future drains away as each alternative is picked apart and exposed as a pipe dream and you are left with the naked truth that the human race has peaked and we are on the long slope to oblivion.

The natural response to this at first is resistance and denial. But eventually you will realise its denial of the truth and acceptance starts to creep in. Once you accept the fact that negative growth of everything is a reality the next step is to try and convince everybody else of the impending brick wall they are speeding towards.

But its futile as nobody wants to change and you are left with the realisation there is nothing you can do but sit back, enjoy the view and the ride as the train we are all on finally drops off the end of the cliff. You stare back blankly and admire what was the peak of human achievement never to be excelled.

All you are left with are the words...

"I told you so"

Or you can take the blue pill and keep watching the BBC and reading the Telegraph

 It is the Black Humour on here that helps me!

Welcome GreeDave - what region of NI are you in? I am from the Carryduff area, just outside Belfast.

What Ziggy says is quite right, although some of us have managed to either get off the train, or have worked out how to jump off before it hits the wall or goes over the cliff......

There is a lot to take in, but at least you are starting to see what is really happening in the world. That red pill you took will take days, weeks and even months, before you can really come to terms with the reality of the situation we find ourselves in.

It is up to everyone to decide the rest of their lives. You can still enjoy it but you might start to have a completely different world view. I did about 6 or 7 years ago and I have spent some time trying to make my life, home, lifestyle more resilient to try to mitigate what is can see is coming. So life can still be good. :)

I'm surprised I managed to look at it, let alone comment. So if I can cope I'm sure you can. I've got photographic evidence of you in places I wouldn't go :D.
