As someone who now works in a shop (a small workers' co-op selling organic food and 'green' household items) I am viewing this from the other side. It seems that at this time of year, the narrative among small High St shops is one of 'must maximise sales when people are out and in the mood to spend money'. I think that is rooted in fear, the fear of businesses that they are all competing with one another and that there must be winners and losers, the fear bought about by working in the current money system. But we don't have to give in to it. We can just carry on doing what we do well - selling good food and everyday household essentials and a few modest treats. I'm sure we will have a good December and continue to do well in 2015. Now I just have to convince a few of my colleagues that we don't need to order in loads more 'Christmas stock'.. but probably a few more sprouts.
