Just lower wattage lights would do fine. No need for it to be lit up fairground.

I really don't fancy walking down a dark street in a moving pool of light. I'd rather have total darkness: that way I can see who/what is lurking.

As has been suggested, there are torches. If you go out and allow your eyes to be come accustomed to the dark, it's surprising how much you can see. I have tried this, and it's not too bad. Lighting in towns is likely to be sufficient just from stray lighting.

Unfortunately the Institute of Lighting Engineers say it has to be a fairground. Not that they have a vested interest, you understand.

I concur. It's actually pleasant. You just need to be prepared.
