We are not alone. The majority of comments on this BBC blog suggest that most people are appalled by the actions of the Israeli commandos.nexus wrote:Aurora and Biff+ another 1Oh come on, children, it's a no-brainer to see that Israel are out of order, whatever one's views of the Middle Eastern conflicts.
Again, +1 ... 100%

Forget this specific case.
Do you REALLY that that most blog comments are worth anything whatsoever?
The Web is becoming one big pool of ill informed shite.
The governments must LOVE it ... we spend all our time moaning about things to each other online instead of doing anything real such as taking to the streets, writing a book, making money, going for a walk ... ANYTHING real in fact.
I just hope that the Web evolves for the better in due course.

Early days for the web; its uses and abuses are definitely still evolving.Vortex wrote:Do you REALLY that that most blog comments are worth anything whatsoever?

I think though we’re learning that activity on the web isn’t worth that much unless it’s backed up with action. Obama used the internet and social networking to galvanise support for his campaign – it worked. On the other hand all the LibDems support on blogs, Twitter etc didn’t translate into anything practical and their vote share barely moved. It’s very easy to post a message, but takes real commitment to canvass on the streets or put your hand in your pocket and make a donation.
But, yep, anything real is usually better than anything virtual.

And who would have thought there were anti-semanticists on the forum.Vortex wrote:Disappointing.Who would have thought we had an antisemite on the forum?
I came here from peakoil.com to get away from their rabid anti-Semitism.
Oh well .....
Muslims and jews were rubbing along together OK in the Middle East for ages before the state of Israel came into being.
BTW, Israel has imposed a news blackout on the incident, so what's being reported - and regurgitated here - is all filtered by the Israeli government.

The consensus on the blogosphere seems pretty close to the position of the UN Security Council:Vortex wrote: Do you REALLY that that most blog comments are worth anything whatsoever?

The Security Council deeply regrets the loss of life and injuries resulting from the use of force during the Israeli military operation in international waters against the convoy sailing to Gaza. The Council, in this context, condemns those acts which resulted in the loss of at least ten civilians and many wounded, and expresses its condolences to their families.
The Security Council requests the immediate release of the ships as well as the civilians held by Israel. The Council urges Israel to permit full consular access, to allow the countries concerned to retrieve their deceased and wounded immediately, and to ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance from the convoy to its destination.
The Security Council takes note of the statement of the UN Secretary-General on the need to have a full investigation into the matter and it calls for a prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation conforming to international standards.
The Security Council stresses that the situation in Gaza is not sustainable. The Council re-emphasizes the importance of the full implementation of Resolutions 1850 and 1860. In that context, it reiterates its grave concern at the humanitarian situation in Gaza and stresses the need for sustained and regular flow of goods and people to Gaza as well as unimpeded provision and distribution of humanitarian assistance throughout Gaza.
The Security Council underscores that the only viable solution to Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an agreement negotiated between the parties and re-emphasises that only a two-State solution, with an independent and viable Palestinian State living side by side in peace and security with Israel and its other neighbours, could bring peace to the region.
The Security Council expresses support for the proximity talks and voices concern that this incident took place while the proximity talks are underway and urges the parties to act with restraint, avoiding any unilateral and provocative actions, and all international partners to promote an atmosphere of cooperation between the parties and throughout the region.

The world would be a much happier place if the bad smell that is the state of Israel could be wiped from the face of the Earth.
Well, if you believe the state of israel *is* the jewish people then that might be valid.
If you also believe that the "history" of some of their citizens gives them carte blanche to act like fascists or mistreat arabs and steal their land and water then again, that might be valid.
Hilarious that someone likened an agressive boarding of ships in international waters where ten or more of the crew were gunned down (wierdly no israeli deaths) to a "coastguard" action.
Alternatively we could all behave like discerning adults and judge the situation on the apparent facts ( or am i expected to deliver a conspiary theory that the crew members committed suicide to make the holy state of israel (gods chosen folks) to appear bad. LOL.
I made the mistake of reading The Oil Drum posts ... an error.clv101 wrote:Are you having a bad weekend Vortex? The last few days posts of yours have all been rather negative.
There are more books being written now than ever before - many new authors started writing blogs.
On R4 this morning they were discussing the expansion of news broadcasting into 'rolling news'.
One speaker said that he had hoped the 'quiet' periods would lead to reporting of mind broadening, unusual snippets of news ... but, no, that had not happened. The 'no news' sections get filled with shite.
The Web is similar - increased performance and distribution has led to a dulling of the content.
So instead of just going to his aid, you'd murder the person hitting them with a stick ?Vortex wrote:Just saw the video on the news.you can condemn this horrendous attack
The Israelis were set upon very nastily by the 'peace' activists.
Personally if I saw a colleague being beaten with metal bars I might also be tempted to fire to save him.
(who boarded who in international waters and armed to the teeth).
Thank f*ck you're not in charge.
I hear that they're after guys to go police the west bank. Change of career vortex ?
Frankly, I'd give the guy attacking an armed soldier with an iron bar a medal. Brave bastard if you ask me.
Thankfully, desk jockey, you're not in a position where you are put in that situation - although you do seem pretty pepped up with fingertip bravado nowadays.Vortex wrote:Personally if I saw a colleague being beaten with metal bars I might also be tempted to fire to save him.
The election didn't go too well for you, eh, Dom? Point to note: The State of Israel does not equate to Jews. I'd be perfectly happy to see the end of Israel, but not if it meant killing people, jews or otherwise.DominicJ wrote:Lets exterminate jews eh Foodimista?

I've found The Oil Drum stuff of Deepwater Horizon pretty helpful. The people writing the posts have been informative and honest about the limitations of the expertise where appropriate. Comments have contributed constructively but, as with any lightly moderated forum, have to be read with the critical eye.Vortex wrote:I made the mistake of reading The Oil Drum posts ... an error.
But back to this thread's purpose, why has Israel captured the people on the flotilla and is still keeping them in detention. Not only was yesterday's action illegal but also the crime continues by the hour.
There seems to have been wrong done on both sides here. It is a terrible situation that 10 civilians have been killed in this manner.
Civilians attacking soldiers is asking for trouble. I note it didn't happen on the other boats in the flotilla and neither were there any deaths on those other boats.
a very sad situation altogether.....
