Haven't you ever wondered how pleasant life would be to have a narrow irrational worldview that confirmed your eternal rightness and all your favourite prejudices, and excused you from any rational consideration? I'm really envious of those folk.skeptik wrote: I thank God that I haven't

So, Tess, the Neo Pagans hang out in Melbourne, do they? I probably have not looked hard enough for them here in Sydney.
But I don't have to wish I had that kind of a mind, or even thank God I haven't, because thanks (?) to something, I got direct personal experience of that magic, spirit, wierdo thing..and after that happens it sure shakes your faith in rational science. Day to day, however, I try to remain well aware of Alan Watt's sage advice "If you get the message, hang up the phone".
One of my favourite takes on the whole thing was Robert Sapolsky, the US biologist's, essay 'Circling the Blanket for God'. As he said, if you get the timing right, they'll still be celebrating your birthday in 2000 years. Get it wrong, and you'll be locked up (if you don't hang up that phone or course).
Get it wrong in other ways, and they are still burning your effigy after 400 years.
