Excellent. It's good that we agree on the loathesome and repellent nature of social darwinism and eugenics.Keela wrote:AgreedKieran wrote: There is a world of difference between the exigencies of a tribal or family unit living on the very edge of survival and those of an advanced, stable society, and I would never judge people acting thus if there were no other choice available. Whatever.

Just interested, you seem to accept that tribal people could bump off their disabled, what about the Athenians or the Spartans or the ancient romans who would inspect children put them through tests and if they didn't pass drown them or expose them to the elements .
Would you class these people in the same way as say the Eskimo or the apache, at what level of development does it become a wicked loathsome thing to do ?

tricky thing to decide
The Spartans didn't need to test their baby's and leave the weak in a chasm on mount taygetus, but they thought it gave them competitive advantage very possibly they were right .

No! Not another good one abandoning ship. You know who the sillies are - just don't read their posts and never reply to them. What's left makes PS a good place.Kieran wrote:Oh sod it. So it's fine for you to put others on the spot with radical accusations and aggressive questioning, but not when you are asked a difficult question.....Kieran wrote:Oh sod it. Mind you I tend to agree that there are better things to do than argue on the net.....
Reminds me of something I was told once:
Don't look for trouble as you walk through life,
And even when you find it,
It is wise and kind
To be somewhat blind
And look for the virtue behind it!
Truth be told most of us are not maliciously motivated.

He doesnt hold different racial groups to the same standards as he holds white people, because deep down, he believes some groups are simply inferior.
In his warped little world, its ok when black people kill the crippled, they're simple savages, its to be expected. But when civillised white folk do it, well, thats a completely different matter.
Bizarre in the extreme but fairly common.
I'm a realist, not a hippie
No, but neither do I see much "virtue" in your attitudes, despite what you wrote.Keela wrote: Reminds me of something I was told once:

I guess you see "virtue" as looking after your family; well that's not virtue, that's biological conditioning, that's looking after your own genes.

Sorry for not replying sooner but I hadn't noticed that it was a reply to my post.lurker wrote:Anymore details how this would work finacially? Sounds abit like feudalism. I'd buy my food from lidl if it was cheaper than your company shop. You'll have to pay for the use of some of the resources such as the laundry and you'll have to buy the food that we produce but there'll be a divvy of the profits at the end of the year.
Reminded me of:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truck_system
Origin of the saying "I'll have no truck with that"
It's not a truck system at all. My daughter suggested that it would be the fairest way of distributing our produce among community members. Do you give everyone the same share so vegetarians have to accept meat; people who don't eat tomatoes or spuds or leeks have their fair share even though they don't want them. People with no children have to pay the same replacement cost for the washing machines as people who do have children, who will obviously use the machines a lot more than those without.
If you would buy your food from Lidl rather than eat the stuff we produced I don't think you would be the sort of person who would want to join our community. I'm not sure you'd be the sort of person we would want in it either. And you wouldn't get your rebate/divvy at the end of the year/month/week/whatever so you would lose out.
We thought it was the fairest way of ensuring that everybody got what they wanted and needed. If there's a problem with money or we end up with a lot of members unemployed, a real possibility, we'll have to find a way around the cash problem; issue our own currency, for example, for the number of hours spent on community work. We will decide what to do, as a community, by voting.
