Gas alert as demand and prices rise

Unless there is a significant change for the worse in terms of wind and temperature, I don't think this snap will cause a GBA even if it lasts more than a week, as seems likely.
Unless we have a problem with one of the major pipelines, or an explosion on Rough, or any of the other problems that seem to crop up just when we most need them not to happen...
Got my first snow as I was cycling to work this morning. In five minutes I turned into a cycling snowman I need windscreen wipers on my glasses.

-5C overnight here in the west of Ireland following several overnights of 0 degrees.
Yesterday during the day, 0 degrees for the first time this winter.
This is seriously cold for this area but thanks to (minimal) preparations, the house stays comfortably warm overnight and pretty much so for the day.
We had a good run of weather recently up until this cold spell so that shortens the winter, though it might prove harder.

My car recorded -6.5 C early Sunday morning. The Cambridge web site recorded -7.6. That equals the previous record(s) from this website, dating back to 1996. All previous records were in February.

We had -8.7 at 3:00 this morning and it was -8 when my wife went to work at 7:30. That's the lowest we've recorded in November since 1983 when we had -14 in our caravan. It was 15 to 20 during the day then. I went out in thermals, a couple of jumpers and a coat to milk the goats and gradually did a strip over the next couple of hours. That was just high pressure for a week or so.snow hope wrote:I recorded -10c on Saturday night and -8c last night. On Saturday my maximum temp was -0.5c.
Theses are record low temperatures in N Ireland for this time of year.
It this lot of cold caused by global warming messing up the Arctic air flow or has the sun caught a cold? We'll find out if we get some cold summers as well, I suppose. Or someone does some measurements of solar output.

About 1.5m off the ground, in the shade and away from a heat source, such as a warm camper van.JohnB wrote:Where's the best place to put a data logger to get an accurate outdoor reading? I've put mine under my van as it's safe there, and I don't have to go far in the cold, but wonder if this is the best place.

I got 'freezehead' whilst logging this afternoon. I was not eating icecream too quickly at the time.
Looks like our decision to go for the Rayburn for cooking, central heating and hot water worked out ok, and it doesn't use electricity to run the system either.
There doesn't seem to be a 'smug' emoticon.

Ken, there is nothing wrong with the Arctic air flow. It is cold up there as normal. We are simply getting fed with cold easterly's from Scandinavia/Russia. It happens from time to time. It may be linked to times when solar activity decreases.....kenneal wrote:It this lot of cold caused by global warming messing up the Arctic air flow or has the sun caught a cold? Oh, and by the way, a lot of the UK has had 4 poor summers in a row.

It's probably the space aliens tampering with the climate to turn the planet into a giant fridge, to make sure the human harvest hasn't gone off by the time they get here.

So when what we think is climate change really kicks in, they will be on their way for their dinner, and have turned the oven on.Andy Hunt wrote:It's probably the space aliens tampering with the climate to turn the planet into a giant fridge, to make sure the human harvest hasn't gone off by the time they get here.

Any faster than light species shouldn't have much problem fixing up a planetary-scale fridge/microwave combi. We are probably just a cosmic ready meal - with the obligatory excess of salt.
