The problem hasnt gone away.
If it really has gone a decade away, then that just means when the problems hit, we'll be better prepared.
very much so , in a sense we have an opportunity for the renewables etc. to catch up and prove themselves in commercial terms. If however R&D grinds to a halt for lack of funding then the problem rerasserts itself again.
The game has changed however from the perspective of 2004/05 when it looked like a growing world economy would hit the brick wall of PO. China and other countries look like they are going to fall of an economic cliff.

Interesting

Immediate gas/electricity shortages have been predicted for a while, as someone mentioned, they happen, but are covered up by price rationing.

A cold winter in 2009-2010 could cause us problems, but to what degree will factory closures save us?
Who knows

Still, this years looks like a good year to get that woodburner fitted.

I dont think we're headed for 90% die off, certainly not here anyway, but the person with a wood/coal burner and some solar electricity will be better off than the person without.

In my opinion
Transistion towns are a nice idea, but I cant see them making themselves into anything but hippie communes or targets, if the Government deciedes Transition Town Windmillville has to give its electricity to the hospital in Normal Town Crackton, thats what will happen.

Don't know whether that is due to a lack of imagination   worldliness   or vision :?
I'm hippest, no really.

If we can't rely on each other we're stuffed.

Obviously crime will go through the roof whatever happens, but in such an overcrowded country as this, non-criminals will have no option but to form communities of some sort. Without some kind of social infrastructure most of us won't last 5 minutes.

I am all for forming communities Ludwig. :) I just want to do my best not to burden my next door neighbour for this, that and the other. I will gladly help others, providing it doesn't dis-advantage me. In fact I have recently joined my local community association with the specific purpose to get more involved with local community and to spread the PO message. I have done that presentation and they know a bit more about what is coming!

I agree very much that we will have to pull together for many reasons, one being to defend against criminals who want to take what is not theirs, 2 for the purposes of food creation, 3 for the purposes of using our skills throughout the community, etc.
