Yes but at least you'd have a gas supply!

But if he didn't have a gas supply he wouldn't have to pay over the odds for the gas

Knowing UK utilities he probably would. Have you ever tried to stop a Direct Debit  ? Last time I looked, you needed the written consent of the payee...

I did let my electricity supplier loose on my bank account once, but not for long. I went back to paying their bills once they had corrected their over estimates. And one of the advantages of living in the country was not having mains gas to pay for. Still dreaming of an off grid passive solar house :D

There's one two hours' drive from me I keep meaning to look at (though they say they've built 249 in Ireland, so there should be a few nearer). Can't afford one but I'd steal ideas.

Having read Misha Glenny's excellent book McMaffia I know I will never know the truth concerning Russia, Ukraine and gas. You just can't tell whoo wears the white hats and who the black.

Russia cut gas exports to Europe by 60 per cent today, plunging the continent into an energy crisis 'within hours' as a dispute with Ukraine escalated.

Yes :)

As far as I've heard, nobody, other than Jerome, has mentioned the fact that Ukraine has a lot of gas storage - it collects Russian gas through the summer and releases it during the winter, a service that Russia is absolutely dependant upon as it doesn't have much storage itself.

Nor is it reported that Ukraine doesn't actually hand over cash to Russia for its gas - it just takes some gas in payment for the infrastructure services.

The media seem to imply that there is just a big pipe from Russia to Europe crossing Ukraine where there is a tap marked 'Syphon off here'.

Even if that were the case, Ukraine can still happily demand payment for use of said pipe, and theres no reason they cant demand that payment as a % of the gas transported.

It is very interesting that the Baltic Sea pipe is going to have no effect on this what so ever, assuming the storage all being in Ukraine is correct.

Another interesting thing to know, but we probably never will, is how much money has gone, and still goes, into whose pockets.

Russia halts gas supplies to European countries

Hmm... not much fun in Stalingrad, he thought, while sipping coffee heated by North African Butane (6 years supply in the garage)
