Signs of the times....

What-O! I'm back to Blighty for a couple of weeks over Christmas, and it will be my first time in the country for any decent length of time since July. So, what has changed? What are the visible trends of our changing times that you have noticed? What has improved? What has worsened? Are folk happier - to be fair reading the news online (the bland neutralised way of checking the world's pulse but all I have at the mo') it seems like the UK is heading towards a hot place in a handbasket... I am intrigued and actually (despite my massive handicap of cynicism) looking forward to being at home for a while...

Surely it should be easier for you to judge how things have changed. Those of us living through this have been exposed to gradual changes (if they exist), you should see a step change. Do you see anything?

forewarned is forarmed.... do I change my flight and just stay here for Chrimble... 17C compared to chilly mcfreezing is tempting... I guess I want to use this as a chance to get you lot to navel gaze as its usually good to listen to and learn from.

Erm, I think if anything has changed, it's the mood of the populace. It's gone from ritual extravagance to dig for victory in the space of 6 months.

Main points of 2008?

Let's see:

1. The only decent MacBurger ever ... 'The M Burger' ... appeared and then disappeared a few short weeks later.

2. Brown f***ed up our economy.

3. WD40 ramped up to $147 a gallon but then slumped back to $40 a gallon. Weird.

4. A pair of foul mouthed yobs were slung off TV, apparently for an error of judgement, but in reality because the Beeb found out that the Deadly Duo were hated throughout the land.

5. Woolies went bust. Should have kept the wooden floors.

6. A deadly ... and apparently incurable ... disease called 'Denver Blog Rot' crossed the pond and even afflicted this very forum.

7. The UK went bust ... oops, that's in the future ... sorry ...

So Vortex, what you're saying is, is that my fave pick n mix shop is fecked.... WAH!!! you could have couched it in soft words and sweet nothings and checked that I was sitting down. Am kidding, that made the news here, Bloomberg Asia is very much reporting the UK as a following Iceland's lead.

Crashing economy, pound in free-fall, oil price slumping, credit crunch, job losses racking up, banks teetered on the edge of the abyss, fiscal stimulus, national debt skyrocketing, household names disappearing - such as Woolies, MFI, HBOS, Bradford and Bingley, Brown saving the world in his underpants. Apart from that we're fine, nothing much happening.

Hmmm I see your point Peter, but I'm not back til Sat and trying to brace myself and rather than the news headlines, I guess I'm trying to find out how the UK is feeling at the mo' - what is the vibe down your local etc? I'm just a little dubious of auntie Beeb at the mo' as she does rather seem to be propaganda'esque brown loving tedium.
