The end of Top Gear?
I must admit I smiled when I heard this story.
This is much better than the Bland/Wossie fiasco.
I can't believe the man could make such offensive, crass, stupid remarks.
Maybe these overpaid grown-up little boys might get their comeuppance for their disregard for the environment. I hate the way they idolise the cars and encourage a reckless attitude to car driving - drinking and driving, smashing up and burning cars for fun. Ho hum.

I can't help but imagine these ridiculously oversensitive people having similar personalities to the NIMBY and BANANA fraternity.
I'd vote to keep Top Gear on TV, it's the funniest programme there is, although their comedy-of-errors routine is becoming a bit tedious and predictable. The last thing we need is to lose our sense of humour.

I agree, Top Gear makes a Sunday evening.Bandidoz wrote:I'd vote to keep Top Gear on TV, it's the funniest programme there is, although their comedy-of-errors routine is becoming a bit tedious and predictable. The last thing we need is to lose our sense of humour.

I'm no NIMBY or BANANA whatever that is.
JC has been saved by the US election so Top Gear's probably here to stay for the time being. I don't suppose the story got much coverage in today's papers.
Like it or not car driving is going to have to be reduced and Top Gear will either have to switch to electric cars or horse drawn chariot racing or be assigned to the history books.
For those who need their fix, they can always watch the DVDs over and over again providing they've got electricity!

Seriously, though.
Personally I think there are too many cars on the road. surely I'm not the only person on this forum who thinks this?
One statistic I heard recently was that there are 800 additional cars every day in the UK. This ever-increasing number of cars on the roads on a small island isn't sustainable. How many new roads can be fitted in - squeezed between the buildings and roads that are already here or ruining the little bit of countryside we have left.
Programmes like Top Gear, Fifth Gear, The Car's The Star etc etc are just advertising for the car industry. The presenters encourage us to keep buying more and more of the damned things. Thanks but no thanks - I'll stick to my Ford Ka which I drive just 2 days a week and the rest of the time I'll ride my bike.

So what, we can choose not to buy. What you are saying is an argument 'for' censorship, if people are too influenced by the media then maybe 'censoship' should be stricter?happychicken wrote:Seriously, though.

Me personally I'm anti-censorship, I believe we should choose freely to do what we do. Maybe it's all too easy to blame the media and this in turn gives the media more belief in their own 'power' - just a thought.
Somehow I suspect you don't watch TG - if you did you wouldn't be saying that.happychicken wrote:Programmes like Top Gear, Fifth Gear, The Car's The Star etc etc are just advertising for the car industry.

I'm not a NIMBY or a BANANA but I'm afraid I was offended by Clarkson's insensitive remarks on TG.Bandidoz wrote:I can't help but imagine these ridiculously oversensitive people having similar personalities to the NIMBY and BANANA fraternity.

I don't consider myself to be a prude but I can't help thinking of the families whose daughters died at the hands of some deranged lorry driver. It may come as a complete surprise but they also have feelings.
What if it had been your daughter the police had found mutilated in a field?
Clarkson typifies many latter day comedians/presenters who seem to mistake the excessive use of bad language and boorish remarks for humour.
Time to grow up guys.

I too think it's time people lightened up and stopped getting so offended so much. I personally feel it more attention seeking going on, "look at me everybody I want to shout about how offended I am!!!"Haggis wrote:Oh christ, what a fecking boring world where everyone tiptoes around in fear of offending someone. There are more choices than between cars or walking you know!willf wrote:Do you really not drive a car? do you walk everywhere?
I don't have a TV so luckily I hardly ever see Jeremy Clarkson, but on the odd occasion when I've had the misfortune to do so, or have read something he's written in a magazine or been reported as saying it just confirms my opinion of him that he's brutal, stupid, testosterone-overloaded, rude, sexist, homophobic and car obsessed. And just covering all that up with the weak fig leaf of saying "Our Jeremy's just provocative" as the BBC are won't to do (knowing which side their money-making bread is buttered) doesn't excuse it.
Apart from that, he's probably OK.
