I'm not sure what good it would do to convince a wider audience. A wider audience would have helped 30 years ago, but now? My experience is that even highly educated people simply don't want to accept PO. The typical response I've had is, "Nobody can predict the future" - as though science's inability to pinpoint specific events in advance were more significant than its ability to demonstrate the limitations of the physical universe.
I see the whole PO issue not as a question of "How can humanity get through this?" but as a question of "How long will I personally last out?" Perhaps if I had children I'd be forced to take a less fatalistic stance; I don't know if I'm fortunate or unfortunate in that respect.
