I filled up with diesel today, I've got some cash, but not that much, food for a few days if I use my imagination, and a couple of weeks supply of gas. After that I may be knocking on the nearest PowerSwitcher's door :D

When even Robert Peston, on News at Ten, says he's "pretty sure that we'll get through the next 24 hours" builds rather little confidence for me - he's "pretty sure"?

I doubt it - but I would expect to see more cash withdrawals than usual.

Oh I'm right with you folks - my preferred form of escapism just now is comic books (Swamp Thing & Sandman) and comic book movies :-)

The US Senate has voted 'nay' to the $700B bailout plan. In a somewhat unexpected turn of events, the bailout plan backed by George Bush as a plan of "tremendous importance to all Americans" has been rejected by the senate. The initial vote of 207 to 226 in the senate was not overturned in the reflection time after the vote. With the DOW falling nearly 500 points and the clock to the deliberation time running to zero, the senator of Texas tried to revive discussions on the bill to no avail.

Think I'll apply for some Bank of England emergency funding this morning... should have say $20 Billion under the mattress by this afternoon.

I expect this turn of the weather will prevent a bank run. People are too lazy these days.... it would be a bank stroll when maybe when it stops raining.

Next - Bush panics, presses the Big Red Button and hands out some 'Unitary Executive Action'

Just a guess, but he's going to be on TV again tomorrow morning 8.45 EST. Why so soon? he was on yesterday... You can tell he doesnt like doing it... that furrowed brow as he strains with all three brain cells to get the words off pat from the autocue....

Paulson plan implemented by emergency Presidential fiat? No idea really, but I wouldn't put it past him. Hmm. Probably not. If it all goes wrong he then gets the ordure poured over his head. I think his game plan now is to try to slide out of the Presidency in such a way that everybody else in the world takes the blame for everything, while he sails away to the Cayman Islands squeaky clean.

UK confirms economy at standstill

Shoppers are tightening their belts as the economy fails to grow
The UK economy saw no growth in the second quarter of 2008, while the gap in the current account widened to its highest level in almost a year.

EU TRADE COMMISSIONER PETER MANDELSON

I feel they've taken leave of their senses and I hope that in Europe we will not see politicians and parliamentarians replicating the sort of irresponsibility and political partisanship that we have seen in Washington.

The American banking system is going to have to reinvent itself... It's going to be consolidated, it's going to operate in a different way, it's going to have to operate with more responsibility, less risk

Mr Cameron said: "As if life wasn't already enough of a struggle with the cost of living going up people are worried this morning about their jobs, their mortgages, their savings, their pensions.

"They get even more worried when they hear talk of a collapse of capitalism. People are confused and concerned. They want to know what's going on. They want to know what is going to happen next."

"This is a moment when democracies are being tested: we need to show that they can deal with crisis and difficulties like this one."

The US administration wants a $700Bn bailout from the American tax payer.

The banks are currently holding 'toxic debts' to the tune of trillions of dollars.

What's the point of a band aid when Wall Street actually requires major surgery?
