Before The Deluge by Jackson Browne

Some of them were dreamers
And some of them were fools
Who were making plans and thinking of the future
With the energy of the innocent
They were gathering the tools
They would need to make their journey back to nature
While the sand slipped through the opening
And their hands reached for the golden ring
With their hearts they turned to each others heart for refuge
In the troubled years that came before the deluge

Some of them new pleasure
And some of them knew pain
And for some of them it was only the moment that mattered
And on the brave and crazy wings of youth
They went flying around in the rain
And their feathers, once so fine, grew torn and tattered
And in the end they traded their tired wings
For the resignation that living brings
And exchanged loves bright and fragile glow
For the glitter and the rouge
And in the moment they were swept before the deluge

Now let the music keep our spirits high
And let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by
By and by--
When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky

Some of them were angry
At the way the earth was abused
By the men who learned how to forge her beauty into power
And they struggled to protect her from them
Only to be confused
By the magnitude of her fury in the final hour
And when the sand was gone and the time arrived
In the naked dawn only a few survived
And in attempts to understand a thing so simple and so huge
Believed that they were meant to live after the deluge

Now let the music keep our spirits high
And let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by
By and by--
When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky

10cc - Wall Street Shuffle

Do the wall street shuffle
Hear the money rustle
Watch the greenbacks tumble
Feel the sterling crumble

You need a yen to make a mark
If you wanna make money
You need the luck to make a buck
If you wanna be Getty, Rothschild
You've gotta be cool on wall street

You've gotta be cool on wall street
When your index is low
Dow Jones ain't got time for the bums
They wind up on skid row with holes in their pockets
They plead with you, buddy can you spare a dime
But you ain't got the time
Doin' the...
Doin' the...

Oh, Howard Hughes
Did your money make you better?
Are you waiting for the hour
When you can screw me?
'Cos you're big enough

To do the wall street shuffle
Let your money hustle
Bet you'd sell your mother
You can buy another

Doin' the...
Doin' the...

You buy and sell
You wheel and deal
But you're living on instinct
You get a tip
You follow it
And you make a big killing

On Wall Street

'I Started Out With Nothin' And I Still Got Most Of It Left' by Seasick Steve

Image

I can't lose what I never had
And you can't take what I ain't got
And when I'm happy it won't make me sad
Depending on you all? Well I'm not
Because I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

When I'm down I just get up
When I'm down well I stand up
Been down many times? Well you know it's true
Haven't had a red dime between me and you
Because I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

If it all fell apart today
I could just walk on down the street
I ain't worried where I'm going to sleep
I could always find some food to eat
Because I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Hey everybody, let's have some fun
You only live for once
And when you're dead you're done
So let the good times roll, let the good times roll
And live a long long
I don't care if you are young or old no no,
\get together and let the good times roll

Don't stand there moaning, talking trash
If you wanna have some fun,
You'd better go out and spend some cash
And let the good time roll
Let the good time roll
I don't care if you young or old,
Get together and let the good times roll

Don't stand there moaning, talking trash
If you wanna have some fun,
You'd better go out and spend some cash
And let the good time roll
Let the good time roll
I don't care if you young or old,
Get together and let the good times roll

Hey mister landlord, lock up all the doors
When the police comes around,
Tell them Johnny's coming down
Let the good times roll
Let the good times roll
And Lord I don't care if you young or old,
That's good enough to let the good times roll

Hey everybody!
Tell everybody !
That B.B. and Bobby's in town
I got a dollar and a quarter
And I'm just raring to clown
Don't let nobody play me cheap
I got fifty cents to know that I'm gonna keep
Let the good times roll
I don't care if you young or old
Let's get together and let the good times roll

Huh.. the thread that refused to die... ok as befits the current atmosphere of financial crisis, I'll offer the ultimate 'doomer porn' special from Bob Dylan. Some people are gonna hate me for this, but I prefer Bryan Ferry's 1973 cover version to the Blessed Bobs original. Early Ferry in tip top form (before he decided he wanted to be Frank Sinatra) makes the song his own, strips away all pretension, and offers no nod at all in Bobs direction. Shameless!

(dreadful video - directed by a 15 year old with a super-8 camera?)

A hard rains a-gonna fall.

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
Ive stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains,
Ive walked and Ive crawled on six crooked highways,
Ive stepped in the middle of seven sad forests,
Ive been out in front of a dozen dead oceans,
Ive been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard,
And its a hard, and its a hard, its a hard, and its a hard,
And its a hard rains a-gonna fall.

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it,
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin,
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin,
I saw a white ladder all covered with water,
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken,
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children,
And its a hard, and its a hard, its a hard, its a hard,
And its a hard rains a-gonna fall.

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin,
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world,
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin,
Heard ten thousand whisperin and nobody listenin,
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin,
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter,
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley,
And its a hard, and its a hard, its a hard, its a hard,
And its a hard rains a-gonna fall.

Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony,
I met a white man who walked a black dog,
I met a young woman whose body was burning,
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow,
I met one man who was wounded in love,
I met another man who was wounded with hatred,
And its a hard, its a hard, its a hard, its a hard,
Its a hard rains a-gonna fall.

Oh, whatll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, whatll you do now, my darling young one?
Im a-goin back out fore the rain starts a-fallin,
Ill walk to the depths of the deepest black forest,
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty,
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,
Where the executioners face is always well hidden,
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten,
Where black is the color, where none is the number,
And Ill tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
Then Ill stand on the ocean until I start sinkin,
But Ill know my song well before I start singin,
And its a hard, its a hard, its a hard, its a hard,
Its a hard rains a-gonna fall.

Wurlitza - "Transition"

Transition, Transition, Tranistion, Transition

Transition - it's the end of suburbia
Transition - the news will disturb ya
Transition - if you want to know why
We've reached peak oil and now demand's exceeding supply

Transition - what we took for granted before
Transition - ain't gonna be so plentiful no more
Transition - and it shouldn't be a surprise
Already oil prices are beginning to rise

Its a wake up call, Its a wake up call
Its a wake up call , wake up - the party's over

Transition, Transition, Tranistion, Transition

Transition - look how dependent we've become
Transition - look how our food is grown
Transition - petro-chemicals deplete the soil
We've gotta find a cure for our addiction to oil

Transition - before the panic sets in
Transition - before the tin hats get in
Transition - can you feel the urgency
The longer we delay it the worse it will be

Its a wake up call, Its a wake up call
Its a wake up call , wake up - the party's over

Transition, Transition, Tranistion, Transition

Transition - we clearly can't go on like this
Transition - but how do we get out of this mess
Transition - it seems impossible
What really needs to change is the political will

Transition - works already begun
Transition - many towns in transition
Transition - and if the truth be told
We'll all be so much better off without black gold

Its a wake up call, Its a wake up call
Its a wake up call , wake up - the party's just begun,

Midnight Oil - Put Down That Weapon

Under the waterline
No place to retire
To another time
The eyes of the world now turn

And if we think about it
And if we talk about it
And if the skies go dark with rain
Can you tell me does our freedom remain

Put down that weapon or we'll all be gone
You can't hide nowhere with the torchlight on
And it happens to be an emergency
Some things aren't meant to be
Some things don't come for free

Above the waterline
Point the finger yeah point the bone
It's the harbour towns
That the grey battleships call home

And if we think about it
And if we talk about it
And if the sea goes boiling black
Can you tell me what you'll do about that

Put down that weapon or we'll all be gone
I must know something to know it's so wrong
And it happens to be an emergency
Some things aren't meant to be
Some things don't come for free

They keep talking about it
They keep talking about it
They keep talking...They keep talking...and talkin' and talkin' and talkin' and...

(whisper:) You can't hide nowhere, nowhere, nowhere...

And it happens to be an emergency
Some things aren't meant to be
Some things don't come for free

Put down that weapon or we'll all be gone
I must know something to know it's so wrong
And it happens to be an emergency
Some things aren't meant to be
Some things don't come for free

Put down that weapon or we'll all be gone
You must be crazy if you think you're strong
'Cause it happens to be an emergency
Some things aren't meant to be
And some things don't come for free

Running On Empty - Jackson Browne

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one
I dont know where Im running now, Im just running on

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But Im running behind

Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I dont know when that road turned onto the road Im on

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But Im running behind

Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I dont know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, thatll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I dont know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
I look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes I see them running too

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But Im running behind

Honey you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
Id love to stick around but Im running behind
You know I dont even know what Im hoping to find
Running into the sun but Im running behind

Not strictly a peak oil song, but maybe one about the fragile state of the world? And uncannily predicts all this rain we get now!

Fragile by Sting

If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour of the evening sun
Tomorrows rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetimes argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are
How fragile we are how fragile we are

marillion : last century for man (2007)

Post by chubbygristle »

The new album http://www.marillion.com/music/albums/hitr.htm is out now and thankfully it's very very uplifting :-) Infact I feel the CDs are both going to be subject to the perpetual playback that the last Radiohead album got for quite some time... anyway, back on topic!! :

Marillion: The Last Century For Man (Somewhere Else , 2007)

Here we are
At the beginning of the last century for man
Usin' up parts of the world we haven't even seen or been to
The wretched of the earth exploited
by the rich few
What's new?

If you are not outraged
You haven't been paying attention
If you are not outraged
You haven't been listening

God bless America, I mean it
God bless the UK, I mean it
God bless la belle France, I mean it
And God help us all

Climb into the car
I know that makes you happy
The sound of your laughter
Will get you so far
Grace or disgrace
Can make you a star these days
Reality pays
Let's decide who the terrorists are

God bless America, I mean it
God bless the UK, I mean it
Hats off to China, and India
And Africa too.

Eat all we can
Drink all we can
Use all we can
Do what we can
Screw what we can
Don't miss a chance
In the last century for man

I wanna feel ALIVE
Gas up the 4 wheel drive!..

God bless America, I mean it
God bless the UK
God bless our children
And God help us all

i have literally just got back from the Marillion gig tonight in Leeds and it was one of the best live performances I have seen in quite some time.

The new album is absolutely amazing and (well the 1st cd) is kind of music made from the Steve Hogarths brush with a book by Ekhart Tolle - The Power Of Now.

Tonight was sheer magic the sound was amazing and the new songs were well received to say the least. It was most certainly an experience.

I've been listenening to the album prety much exclusively for the last week and intend to read the 'Power Of Now' shortly. I think that this latest effort has inspired me and it brought me round to thinking how important it is for us stil enjoy living even though we are facing the worrying times ahead of us - to live in the now. I have been finding it very hard to do this properly for a while as I imagine most people on this forum will have.

I imagine that this is the sort of thing that keeps people like Rob Hopkins going (as he has certainly offered the most spiritual collection of musings about Peak Oil I have read).

Er, I am sure I was going to go somewhere with this.... oh right yes! Has anyone else been thinking along similar lines, i.e. not pretending that the 'bad' things are not on the way (denial) but looking at trying to get the most out of now (while not forgetting to make plans for the future) - and if so what have people been doing or changes they have been making?

Well anyway, we'll see how long all this lasts for... I just thought that it would be a terrible thing to waste a sunstantial amount of life worrying about things that we don't really know how they are going to pan out anyway. I know it's sometimes difficult to put it to one side and get on with things, but at the end of the day, time spent worrying is time wasted.

I have been getting kind of ratty and impatient and as someone mentioned the other day amidst a heated discussion about polititcs... 'misathropistic'. I remember the days before I knew about PO being a much more relaxed and laid back person. Anyway. Er, off to bed.

Be good peeps.

I came across a chinese proverb a few weeks ago which I think sums up the best attitude to have. It goes something like this: If all you have in the world is two pennies then with one penny buy a loaf of bread and with the other, a lily. The bread is to live on, the lily is to give you a reason to live.

Haven't heard any Marillion stuff since the first few albums back when I was in sixth form college and a bit of a fan. Will have to check out what they sound like now :)
