LATOC as a springboard?
Moderator: Peak Moderation
Fubar, it's almost two years to the day that my colleague referred me to LATOC and my world view shifted overnight. Following Kubler-Ross's 'Five stages of grief' model, I was in Denial (1)for a couple of paragraphs of Savinar's blurb but since his argument seemed compelling this rapidly turned to Anger (2) that I'd reach 37 without having even heard the term 'Peak Oil'. My mind went into Bargaining (3) whilst still reading the website (Please world, let me and my family and friends be OK whatever happens) but I then slumped into a mini-Depression(4).
Acceptance (5) was a while coming because having read the LATOC stuff then the Long Emergency, I had a US-centric view of PO and couldn't get past the thought that I'd have eaten my own children before they got to secondary school (which would, of course, have been burned for fuel anyway). Thankfully, I discovered Transition Towns and Powerswitch about a year ago which have saved my sanity and have provided an opportunity to meet local and virtual people who share my concerns about PO and climate change and who manage to be deadly serious and hilariously funny all at the same time (no mean feat).
If you enjoy Long Emergency, check out Kunstler's weekly 'Clusterfuck nation' blogs. Funny and usually horribly accurate.

Dear Vladimir, I have changed my name because Panicky Mum reflected neither my current state of mind nor my Russian roots. I think that you're doing a great job and look forward to enjoying an excellent supply of gas for some time yet. All the best!
Hi Pani Kova
You were Panicky Mum?
I`ve seen some interesting posts from you...
Powerswitch is a lifesaver. I now have a much more balanced outlook, although I do take a strange pleasure in reading some of the doomer stuff, I don`t subscribe to the Mad Max theory.
That said, I do believe we are in for a major environment and lifestyle change and considerable hardship for many people.
Just getting into LE now, I`ll let you know how I get on.
Thanks for the Kunstler suggestion.
Your new name suggets you are less concerned about the situation?

Fubar,
Not less concerned. I couldn't be more concerned. Just less panic stricken! Like I said, I've got my head round various possible scenarios and I'm now in 'right then, let's get on with it (whatever it turns out to be)' mode.

The first site I remember was dieoff.org and I was interesting in peak oil online before latoc was set up , I found out about the subject in the 1970s .

RGR...
We all know LATOC is on the extreme side, the whole point of this thread is just that.. it gets people reacting.
Your recent replies are getting dangerously close to trolling which is a shame.
On form you are an interesting person to debate with, when you are just insulting/ranting I find it hard to stay interested.

I would agree that LATOC goes a long way towards defeating its own purpose with the nuttier side of things,
however my point is that it will often lead to people exploring wether there really IS a problem.
Often just googling Peak Oil is enough to make someone realise that a LOT of people are talking about this
and an awful lot of them are quite clearly VERY mentally stable.
If its such a none issue, how come so many people are talking about it?
PS, don`t want this thread to simply be me and you arguing... [/i]

True enough, but I believe this is all in the tinfoil section or if not, in the off topic. It's easy enough to pick and choose, and I'm sure I could find something equally barmy (in an English style) here if I look far enough (and I am English by the way)RGR wrote:How do you like their cures for cancer?jonny2mad wrote:

The latest speculation is that the Republicans are responsible for creating the recent string of hurricanes in the Atlantic....and that NASA is crashing satellites into Jupiter to upset some sort of alien invasion plans or another.
Yup....LATOC is great!
Whilst to a certain extent some of the theories presented by a certain mod are a bit left field, it would appear that most ignore that mods' eccentricities and listen to her proven ideas on animal husbandry and off grid living. It's a give and take situation with the internet. Latoc has recently been plagued with a horde of Trolls, which have been dealt with mostly.
p.s RGR, are you aiming for a record of being banned from all Peak Oil sites?

No names, no pack drill
Toast, although in most ways a troll, did have some useful input in the 'I'm back' thread, none of which was recognised or even answered to by the OP. Maybe he knew his days were numbered and tried to change his stance, I don't know.
I can't comment on the mod's stance about cancer cures, as my wife has just been diagnosed with a tumour.
i think we'd better leave it at that RGR. I do read your posts here, and I did read them on Latoc and admired your stance, and the fact you stuck to your principles.

Does it really matter that someone on a forum believes in odd cancer cures , cancer cures are not the main theme of the site .
You may think the people on latoc are nuts , but what really can you see when you look at how the world is dealing with the prospect of peak oil , we have the return to imperialism .
I think latoc and doomers have a more likely idea of the most logical outcome , Ive been to uk peak oil meetings and their full of nice people but they dont want to address the darker things that could come out of this
see to hippies or greens growing your own food and walking and not living in a throwaway society may sound very nice , but to a lot of people the prospect of all that makes them very angry Ive had people threaten to kill me after I told them about peak oil and that they might have to change their lifestyle .
I dont think heinburg et all have a clue because they dont really understand how the majority of people think .

RGR is just doing his usual stirring..... we should be oblivious to it by now, but he is infecting more and more threads.
