Post peak birthing

Well, we had our birth of a beautiful boy on 29 August. Our birth experience definitely bore out all the stuff in the Business of Being Born film. Anyway, needless to say, my wife was absolutely brilliant throughout and we have seen how easy it is for the "cascade of interventions" to be set in motion.

But now we've got our hands very full with the business of being new parents and all other concerns seem strangely blurry and unreal. Just off now to get some more nappy wraps!

While you're out remember to get yourself a bottle of something nice to 'wet the baby's head' with!

Hope you are all well.

Try lots of different nappies - we found the all in one stuffable types were
best for the first six months, from the fact they seem to last until they are a bit bigger and they keep the baby drier. YMMV. Don't get the ones that say they go from newborn to 2 - it just means they don't fit at any age. A lot of companies do reduced price samples.

Bet you post a bit less over the next few months

Congrats Adam!

My daughter started primary school today. Seems a blink of an eye that she was a tiny tot like your little lad. We've probably got enough kids between us to start up a Powerswitch group for under sixteens. Power rangers? (with solar powered rechargeable battery packs, obviously!)

Yup, we are trying out different real nappies - our local council gives vouchers for £54 to help pay for them. So far the pre-folds are our favourite.

I won't be posting much for a while....

...off now to do a nappy change!!

p.s. what was peak oil all about again?

The extra work of real over disposables is not so onerous, certainly when the baby is breast-feeding. The pre-folds are working very well. We're going to feel very pleased with ourselves when we put our rubbish out on Sunday night and it will be no bigger than before the baby arrived.

It is interesting that, although my view of peak oil and related issues is unchanged, all the problems of the world seem fuzzy and distant. Every problem seems small and solvable. There is a glow of warm, shimmery optimism in the air. Very strange and lovely - I've never taken any hallucinogenics but the feeling we are experiencing now is an amazing natural high.

Even posting this now, I cannot really get very concerned about about peak oil issues. It all feels unimportant. I feel now that there is a chance that there will be space within the turbulent times to come for our son to find contentment and therefore it is all worth it.

Agreed about the feeling. A friend puts it well - there's a whole set of programs & feelings that turn on when you have children that you just can't understand if you don't have kids. The high helps the tiredness, I think.
It does make you more positive and determined about the future - its not just you now, and puts your efforts into perspective.
The flipside, of course, is the fact that you have another person who you are entirely responsible for.
The other feeling I had just after birth was if any hurt her I'd chop them into bits and feed them to rats.
Very common in Dads, apparently.
