Of course the writer thinks nuclear was the only answer.

Did you mean to say 'was'? It's correct though, it could only have been the answer 10 years ago. I'll read the article now...Kieran wrote:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... years.html

Not a right lot. It's all been said on these forums over the past few years.
Not really that great a feeling being right about it all though is it.

Does anyone know what he's trying to say? (I can only assume he's referring to an anti-nuclear stance) Presumably the same one's that have been pointing this scenario out for ages and suggesting a large scale renewable and energy use reduction programme ...Politically, the blame for this astounding mess lies in all directions .... with those smugly shortsighted 'environmentalists'.

I suspect this comes from banding all the different environmentalist groups together.peaky2 wrote:Does anyone know what he's trying to say? For example wind farms are often objected to by bird lovers.
Tidal barrages are opposed by marine wildlife and bird lovers.
Only conservation and solar power hasn't met with any objections as far as I know.

Yes electricity can be rationed, and was during the 1970s, the cause being the coal miners striking rather than a shortage of generating capacity.Totally_Baffled wrote:A question for you guys if you dont mind
What are the options for rationing electricity when the time comes?
Are there options?
Firstly electricity was cut off to different areas in turn, on a rota basis. This was done as fairly as possible and worked well, though it was before we were as reliant on power as is the case today.
Secondly non essiential trades and industries were only allowed to use electricity for three days a week.
They were allowed to trade or work on the other days provided they used no electricity on these days.
Thirdly the use of electricity for some non-essiential purposes was banned this included the external lighting of buildings, the lighting of advertisments, the electric heating of public buildings.
There was also a limit on the watts per square foot allowed to be used for lighting public buildings and workplaces. The lighting of empty rooms was prohibited except in the home.
There were also calls for voluntary savings in addition, and people were asked to not use Christmas lights.
(O/T but I still put lights on the family Christmas tree, though to save energy, these lights were only lit during power cuts!)
"Installers and owners of emergency diesels must assume that they will have to run for a week or more"
Conservation is objected to by anyone with a vested interesting in continual growth. i.e. banks, govements, economists etc etc. We need to replace and substitute boy! Not Conserve. Good god. Heretic.TB wrote:Only conservation and solar power hasn't met with any objections as far as I know.

For every complex problem, there is a simple answer, and it's wrong.

Yup. It's called 'rolling blackouts'. Everybody (except emergency services such as hospitals) takes their turn being cut off for so many hours.Totally_Baffled wrote:A question for you guys if you dont mind

I imagine this means you are not old enough to remember the 70's?

SJ - sorry I meant there are not any environmental groups that opposes conservation, but there are for wind/tidal.SunnyJim wrote:Conservation is objected to by anyone with a vested interesting in continual growth. i.e. banks, govements, economists etc etc. We need to replace and substitute boy! So I was between 0 and 6 in the 1970's. So yes, I know about what happened in the 1970's, but I dont remember it (to busy playing with lego )
I was just wandering what other options there were, are rolling blackouts the only options (along with all the others listed by adam).
Thanks
