Campaign to send a PO book to all UK MPs?

What can we do to change the minds of decision makers and people in general to actually do something about preparing for the forthcoming economic/energy crises (the ones after this one!)?

I've only just spied this tread. I think it's a fantastic idea. Can we move this thread to general discussion, make it a sticky and really work on this? I agree that if all the books were sent at the same time, it may well cause a buzz round westminster. Might get them at least discussing the book, and even those that wouldn't otherwise read it would feel they had to.

Strahan's book gets my vote too.

It strikes me that we remind more and more about a sect of some kind, relying on sending out the equivalent of bibles...

Now if I was going to send them a bible it would be this;

I have read it and it's a hoax! A beautiful and romantic hoax, but still a hoax. There is not one single photograph in that book, just drawings, and that's because it is about romantic dreams and has not been tested by the author.

I'm rather experienced in a couple of the issues presented, among them textiles, and I promise you this: Nobody will be able to produce anything based on that book. Sketchy presentations missing crucial information.

I think you're being a bit harsh there MacG! It's a broad brush over what is actually a huge range of subjects. He doesn't go into anything in huge depth agreed, but that's not what it's about. There is some usefull stuff in Self Sufficiency though. His Elderberry wine recipe is great. I use his method of skinning rabbits. His chicken feed recipe is good to.

Have you read 'Fat of the Land'?

A good idea, and one that David Strahan is already running. See
http://www.davidstrahan.com/campaign.html

Also, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Peak Oil and Gas will be publishing a report on its first year of meetings and will cover the whole range of Peak Oil thinking. This will be made available to all MPs too, and will be a more succinct read than Strahan's excellent book.

Is there anything we can do to directly inform MPs

Gordon Browns response today was utterly crap beyond belief.. real strength through increased depletion madness

is there any point releasing press releases and the such like or are we too small fry?

can we step up our game?

Euan means current post at TOD is an excellent primer as it is addressing the issue fro the price(hence political) side of the equation yet gets all the basics down.

http://europe.theoildrum.com/node/4007#more

could we use it as a template for a release of some sort

I think that this is a cracking idea and I'm happy to stump up the money for my MP's copy (Jim Cunnigham). I also think it's a good idea to send them copies at the same time - any ideas?

It does have a pleasantly Orwellian ring to it though.

It's a great idea. I'm moving to Bracknell in the coming week (a garden at last - hurrah!) so will send a copy of David Strahan's book and a covering letter to my new MP, Andrew MacKay. According to his website he's the Senior Political and Parliamentary Advisor to David Cameron, which might prove useful... Perhaps I should go and see him in person once summer is over to see if he has actually read it! :)

Summer hols for MPs finish in about November. The rest of us have already done Post-Hols depression, Back To School, opening of the (proper) Footie season, sudden onset of dark evenings, Hallowe'en, "Leaves On The Line", Bonfire Night and (in my case) dark mornings. [/whinge]

Ah yes. Well, with that kind of summer break he'll have even less of an excuse not to have read it by the time he heads back to 'work'...

Make sure you contact David Strahan on the link on Powerswitchjames's link earlier - I've just checked & Jim Cunningham hasn't been sent one yet. :)

At least that's solved the problem of who should keep the list, but I wonder how quickly it's updated.

Been offered an appointment to see my MP (Shailesh Vara, Con) at his surgery this weekend. I'll give him my copy of David Strahan's book and register that over on his website.

I'll show Mr Vara the 'oil age' Hubbert's poster and refer him to APPGOPO who will doubtless be able to advise him further. The only bit missing from the book is the recent Export Land Model concept, but it's easy enough to explain.

I have a poster on my office wall - see below.

I can explain the situation in 3 minutes.

A better annotated poster would cut me out of the loop - even better.

A book can't do that.

Seen my MP (Shailesh Vara, Conservative) this afternoon, following a few letters / emails. Gave him a copy of David Strahan's book. Will let David know.

Here's what I covered in detail, over on the other thread -
