What are you planting this year???

What changes can we make to our lives to deal with the economic and energy crises ahead? Have you already started making preparations? Got tips to share?

HWH your globe artichokes look healthy. I've found they LOVE horse manure!

I have several globe artichoke plants here - my gran had one in the garden when she lived here and recently I've propagated several more.

I found 2 very early globes last week - so I picked them golf ball size just to try. Of course no choke and all the centre leaves are soft so the whole heart could be eaten - delicious. I've never eaten them like this before - but as the only fan in the house.... I thought I could afford to eat some tiny!

Sorry to hear your greenhouse didn't get mended. You weren't tempted to fit poly over the frame as a temp measure? Will you still be able to grow tomatoes? I think you're warmer so perhaps they'll grow. I'd miss toms. (I can't grow them outside..... )

Planting this week... toms, cucumbers, courgettes, peppers and chillis - all reared in greenhouse and transferred to polytunnel.... :)

The last measurable rain we had was on May the 5th, when rain from the south left a lot of dust, visible on surfaces like cars, presumably picked up from the Sahara. It's been a wettish spring in general and local aquifer-fed streams are flowing well following the rains last summer.

We'll be doing a rainwater dance soon as our 2 x ibc tanks are running low. (not helped by me letting half of the water run out last week!)

I think I'll be doubling up to 4,000 litres soon. Can never have too much rainwater stored away.

Rain due tomorrow apparently. Bring it on. Only one tank left....

Have been breaking a couple of hundred sqm this spring, and run potatoes on half, the rest divided between red beets, peas, beans, squash, garlic, salad and parsley. Will replace some aged blackcurrant, raspberry and rhubarb in a couple of weeks. Most for fun and quality-of-life.

So you have a short summer with very long daylight hours, making the veg grow much faster than further south?

Yea. A couple of months when everything grows day and night, and then eight months of hibernation.

Also put 5 raspberry canes in.
