Just a few of my thoughts on self defence training.....
Ive studied a number of martial arts over the years from wing chun to amercian kenpo karate. All have there merits and are excellent for teaching discipline etc.
I think any sort of self defence training is better than nothing but false confidence in your ability or the invincibility of the martial arts system you learned should be drilled in at an early stage.
Nothing can prepare a 5th dan whatever martial art dojo trained karateka for a street confrontation with an experienced street fighter scum bag.
One good piece of advice I got from an instructor an dealing with a knife attack...run!!!

well you may not be able to outrun the person with the knife and you get slashed or stabbed in the back or your throat cut from behind .
I know thats what lots of people tell you to do but your pretty defenceless with someone behind you so you have to be sure your able to outrun the person with the knife .
I might run but it would depend on what weapons were nearby, by that I mean things like bottles, a sweeping brush, a chair, a cloak , fire, even a flashlight , rocks , a kitchen tile , a rucksack I could go on and on you have to learn how to quickly use things in your enviroment that were not designed as weapons but you can use as weapons .
It would also depend on the type of knife and if I thought the person using it knew what they were doing whether it was a lone attacker or a group .
I think you have to be able to make a instant judgement and some times your best bet is to attack the person that threatens you , if your attacked by a group running away I dont think is always that sensible , the best thing you can do is single out one of them and kill them or knock them very fast into a bloody mess .
Ive had this happen to me and not running away I know saved my life , groups have a sort of group mind and you have to be able to psychologically defeat this group mind it not that rational I mean if you have 6 people against you and you take out the leader the other five should still be able to beat you but often times they wont .
you can direct your verbal assaults on the person your going to attack so that the other people in the gang have a way out without attacking you as its your victims fault for getting into a fight with you , if you put the leader down hard enough they wont actually be that keen on fighting you
if your in a period of anarchy like after peak mad max world why dont you have a knife or a gun
