Just called my local bookie - wouldn't commit to anything, says he'll give me a call back, but isn't sure if they would even take the bet! Sounds like the odds would be dismally low, that's even if they accept!! WTF do they know that I don't?

Err - umm - why aren't we ... or the government ... panicking about these huge price increases?

Surely some aspect of the economy will break once these prices filter through?

Shouldn't we all here be hoarding or weeping or building a bunker or something?

Or is the price of crude oil meaningless to Mr & Mrs Average?

I am clueless - would've thought that at $100 there should be some sort of stir, but nothing, dinada, zilch. No-one seems to be the slightest bit bothered. It's all about house prices and banks lending to each other and us - obviously those things are totally unrelated to the oil price? Dunno, my head hurts thinking about it. When WILL it be a concern? Probably never, in the final convulsions of an expiring society, it will still be due to the price of eggs in China/the beer tax/aliens, delete as applicable. (I nicked the last from Wolf at the Door - he "predicted" this in 2004)!!

Perhaps they think that they will come down. What has happened to the wall of oil due in 2008?

Am I misunderstanding the response? It seems to be, "its the local authorities responsibility to find the land for all the different demands like housing , open spaces, parks , allotments etc. Nothing to do with central government so get stuffed!"

No acknowledgment at all that local authorities have an impossible task of providing more housing (and all other associated concrete infrastructure) without impacting open spaces, green belt, allotments or farmland!

Therefore they take the least worst option (or least unpopular) which is to build housing (to meet central government targets) and to hell with open space, green belt or allotments as that is what will give them the least grief?

That is presumably why people are asking for allotment protection!?

Yes, as they never have to buy any, and are generally unaware how it's price feeds into everything else. All they are concerned about is the price of petrol at Tesco, the bulk of which is comprised of tax - Fuel Duty and VAT.
