Another question: is oil really in barrels? If so, are they plastic, metal or what? And are they re-used?
Pretty much always transported by pipe or in big storage tanks in tankers these days. Historically though, barrels were much used.

Steel barrels are still much used in the less developed world for the storage or transport of relativly small amounts of petrol, diesel, lubricants etc.
In the UK this is less common, though most fuel depots can supply red or white diesel in drums.
They are re used when practical, if not for the original purpose, then as refuse containers, incinerators, barbecues etc.

They also inspired steel-band music! And they used to be used to cordon off bits of road for maintenance, before the invention of road-cones.

Ouch! though it is not that high on the website of 321 energy
http://www.321energy.com/

Do you have a more up to date source ? that does not require a paid subsrciption.

The definitive source is here:
http://www.nymex.com/lsco_fut_cso.aspx
but 15 mins delayed for free access.

One place that is pretty good at reporting new highs as they happen is here:
