Pretty much always transported by pipe or in big storage tanks in tankers these days. Historically though, barrels were much used.

Steel barrels are still much used in the less developed world for the storage or transport of relativly small amounts of petrol, diesel, lubricants etc.
In the UK this is less common, though most fuel depots can supply red or white diesel in drums.
They are re used when practical, if not for the original purpose, then as refuse containers, incinerators, barbecues etc.

They also inspired steel-band music! And they used to be used to cordon off bits of road for maintenance, before the invention of road-cones.
