SCOTLAND could become the global leader in the fight against climate change by producing ten times as much electricity from renewables as the country needs, Alex Salmond claimed last night.

The First Minister said he wanted Scotland to become a "global advocate" for renewable energy and suggested there was so much potential in this sector that the country could not only become self-sufficient but could also produce enough electricity for the whole of Britain.

There's a lot of talk in the UK of doing big renewable energy schemes but there's not a lot actually happening. Is Alex Salmond all hot air like the rest of them?

Doubt it. He's "minded" to stop the big Lewis wind farm, the one covering the same area as greater London.
Most locals want it (jobs to stop decline of local community, long term income)
Arty types and holiday homers from the central belt don't as poverty is more picturesque.

I wonder who he's more likely to listen to?:roll:

Thanks for that, Jon from Rugby. Lowlanders will really have to lay off from relocating in their own country but you can really enlighten us all by becoming another immigrant. By the sound of it you would fit in with many other "New Scots". [Mr Salmond and other pretendy econo-nationalists wouldn't really be able to get enough of you.]

Some of us can see that there's an energy problem. We don't really see the need for cultural and environmental while so much other destruction's
going to happen in time to come.

Like the old 'discredited' left who asked "in whose interests is this?" real nationalists, be they never so attuned to the 21st century realities, must do the same thing. I can see a windfarm from my street and it's fine, but I choose to put conservation [cultural, natural, etc.] ahead of the 'need' of metropolitan consumption to continue in the manner to which it has become accustomed.

I'm worried.

All those wind farms will suck the energy out of the wind.

Stillness will settle upon the Earth.

Sailors will become becalmed.

Storms, gales, cyclones, whirlwinds and hurricanes will become fairy stories to scare the children with.

The clouds will no longer scud.

Rain will no longer be 'driving'.

The Mistral, Sirocco and the Foehn will be forgotten.

The Albatross will die out with the decline of the ocean winds.

Each day in a globally warmed world will become an endless blur of heat and sunshine unrelieved by a single cooling breeze.

It is all most sad.

But the electricity will power fans and air conditioners to keep us cool, moving air in vast amounts. Think of the wind generated by all the electric vehicles!

Local council has a majority for it.
Documentary I saw had locals voicing yes, and polls to back it up.
Some strong opposition, but all seemed to be incomers.

Major objectors in doc were a woman in safe, public sector job
and retired arty type who waxed lyrical about the landscape and isolation.
Neither talked about what the local kids are supposed to do for work.

No thanks. My family were kicked out during the clearances, so we won't be back if its all the same to you.
My cousin's wife's family are all east coast (near Tain), and don't see what the fuss is about. They look out on the moray firth at the rigs and see jobs. At least for now. The east coast up past Inverness is empty enough now, and no end of locals to them have to work the rigs to stay in the area.

I can't stand Salmond. He's already showing he is as bad as the Westminster lot. Not sure if independence is the right thing for Scotland, as it doesn't solve any of the coming problems. England and Scotland (and Wales) will survive or sink together.

That's a well thought out view. My point was that Salmond's isn't and he can't talk about expanding renewables when he's minded to stop Lewis for far less thought out reasons than you have.

Hmmmmm, turning down planning permission for the biggest yet windfarm, doesn't quite fit with the green superpower image Scotland's Parliament are trying to propagate. Well done guys....
