Give me two good reasons, why I oughta stay....
UK land area: 24,000,000 hectares.
Finhorn eco village footprint = 2.56 hectares per person.
UK sustainable population = 9.3 million.
Current population = 60+ million.......
Can't put it in any more simple terms than that really. Why, in the face of those figures would you want to stay in the UK?

I think you should go, Jamie.

Record numbers seek new lives abroad
For decades it has been the dream of millions, but for an increasing number of Britons it is becoming a reality. New figures show the number of people leaving the country to start a new life abroad has reached record levels, with almost 600 emigrating every day.
I guess it depends on how you think the UK will cope relative to other countries.
I personally think we'll pull through PO, as we squander ridiculous amounts of energy we will simply have to economise. There will be lots of squealing and probably rationing but that's life. It isn't going to be a barrel of laughs and who knows how the cards are going to fall (1984?, Mad Max?, ecotopia?) but people are amazingly resilient when push comes to shove.
We may even get off relativley lightly when it comes to GW, I'll take slightly warmer temperatures, a longer growing season and decent amounts of precipitation over some of the horror predictions for places like Australia and the US.
That said my biggest concern by some distance is still food, others on this BB are more optimistic (and I hope you're right) but I can't help but wonder if there are too many mouths to feed on this island. Maybe it's because I live in a big city, all I see from day to day are lots and lots of people and no fields. Bring the farms into the cities?
Where are you thinking of going to?

(I'm not saying I agree with their actions - just stating my opinion)
When I moved to Dubai last year (I returned this year), I lost count of the people asking me if I was moving to get away "from the immigrants."
And I'm with Cabrone. Temperate climes will be the best for post PO. We'll be OK here in blighty as long as the gulf stream doesn't decide to stop and send us into an extended Arctic circle. South of France it is then!

Your conclusion implies no imports of food or that all trade is unsustainable. seems a tad negetive. The 60m number could contract over time due to lower standards of living but not appear to be dramatic. If you move outside the UK you risk being the outsider that is at more risk from PO wherevr you end up.SunnyJim wrote:UK land area: 24,000,000 hectares.

Sadly, it seems that Bangla Desh's population just got smaller, but its area also got smaller.

I looked at population density and so forth for one of my pages:

Personally I know several people (including myself) intending to leave Britain. As far as immigrants are concerned, I would prefer to get away from the average, racist, drunken Briton and find somewhere where people are friendlier and more tolerant.

Alerting the world to the dangers of peak oil
Do you really believe that??? Surely the major factor post PO will not be accent or creed, but usefullness and ability. Looking at the figures in this country, many people could be 'surplus to requirement', where as a country with few people to work the land could be very receptive to help, what ever the accent. Violence will erupt when there are too many people for the environment to cope with.If you move outside the UK you risk being the outsider that is at more risk from PO wherevr you end up.
As far as imports go, as oil declines and economies collapse why would a country wish to keep exporting food? Who will want the pound? What could we give them in return??? Any place with lots of land and a high agricultural output per head of population will need to put some of the land aside for bio fuel to run machinery to help with harvest, or more likely will need immigrants to help with the harvest, which will reduce exports. Export land model of food...... makes sense you know.
These are the people that scare me most. Big lazy drunks that think the world owes them a living. Scary. Seems to me there are many in the UK who will not want to put nose to the grindstone and work towards a solution.I would prefer to get away from the average, racist, drunken Briton.
