My husband has just finished reading your first book

I read very little fiction but when I saw your name plastered all over the front cover I did take a very obvious second look, so much so that my other half was prompted to comment, "what's the matter, have I got something stuck in my hair?".
"No," I replied, "I just noticed that you're reading a book by Alex Scarrow and I was wondering whether you are enjoying it?"

Alex, you'll be pleased to know that he did enjoy it and, of course, I then told him you're a peak oil author and have written a second book. Hopefully he'll buy it (and then I'll read it too).

What I'm really enjoying hearing, is of people who are reading it, and then passing it to their significant other...who then is equally enjoying it. It does seem to be going over well with both genders.

Now if only my publisher can get Richard and Judy to take a look at it....I could imagine Richard Madeley getting all worked up about the subject.

It's still only available in hardback, and sadly no sign of a distribution deal in North America. So that said, I think it's sold a modest 10k copies.

I'm told that's pretty good for an unknown author and that I should be thrilled. But when I see the latest footballer biographies, or the latest novel by Jordan or Kerry Katona selling hundreds of thousands of units, my heart sinks. The dittoheads and knuckle-draggers out there just want their sex and football...and couldn't careless that oil just topped $100 a barrel, the future population peak has been upwardly adjusted to 9.5 billion in the next 10-20 years and that we're all on the road to hell.

Oh well. As long as there's some beer in the fridge, some crap on TV, and another kiss-n-tell celebrity biography to read....the lemmings are happy.

read the book last night read it in one go , very good book will give it to my sister and any friends I can think of , having a work of fiction on the subject is great because lots of people wont read non fiction .

what people could do is say hmm I have this book written by this person I talk to on the internet guy called alex scarrow very good book, fine writer Ive read it want to borrow it .

I think if youve read the book you may be more aware of how fragile the system is and you start asking yourself how would the country react in that situation, would the world fall apart like that ,what would you do in that situation.

I would tell anyone its worth reading or giving as present to someone who likes fiction , in fact I may get another copy to send round group of more distant friends

I second that. I'm mid-way through reading it and it's already jolted me into buying some emergency supplies. I live in a flat so there's only limited room for keeping stuff, but I got in a bunch of tins just in case! I even bought tinned corned beef despite being a vegetarian. There'll be no time for such sensibilities if TSHTF.

Damn you, Scarrow, I can't sleep properly now.

Sorry Caspian. But think of this...if it's spooked you, just imagine what affect it has on the head-in-the-gound lemmings who never really think about this kind of stuff. The sort of morons who watch Big Brother, love Jeremy Clarkson, and drive everywhere in a huge feckin' tank of a car. Even idiots like that can be rattled if you frame the story right.

Jonny...thanks for spreading the word. Word-of-mouth really does work as a form of promotion, especially when it's about a relevant issue, an important issue.

What sort of feedback have you had from people with no prior knowledge about peak oil or precariousness nature of our society?

I've just finished reading Last Light (I got it from my library) and I think it's a great piece of work. Believable characters, good pacing and a nice way of framing the issue of peak oil. The only thing I was less sure about is the conspiracy angle of the story, which (for me anyway) veered uncomfortably into 9/11 territory. But that's a minor issue really. You've got me thinking again about my preparations and what I would do if anything remotely like what you describe came to pass.

I'll be recommending this to others for sure. They'll probably hate me for giving them sleepless nights though
