"You know what I think about when reading the thread? This look like confessions at an AA meeting."

<stand up and moves hesitantly towards centre of circle>

Good evening everyone, my name is Peakprepper, and I am a peakholic - this is my first post here.

I have not looked at a PO website or read anything PO related or had dark thoughts for about oh.... 30 seconds.

Anyway... I first got sent some links a few months ago, and have been reading, surfing, and preparing for a while, great site, and nice that it's UK-centric too.

Hi all, I came across the site by chance on google. Watched lots on peak oil years ago. Plus growing up in a village in the 70's that had 2000 people and only two cars I soon realised in the dreaded thatcher years that this car/oil craze could not go on for ever. Now in the 2000's its totally gone tits up, cars everywhere, greed and credit card debt galore, spoilt want it now people, and burn energy like its everlasting and free just can not go on much longer.

So over the years I've worked hard to lower the amount of everything I need to live on ie no morgage, no debt, good family structure, and to have at least the abilty to survive if things get that bad. I'm not self sustainable but I am working towards living rough if needed. I wish I could move to a home with a bigger garden but thats not posible at the mo. But at least the one i got is big and we are surrounded by mountains.

I'm a builder by trade and worked in that field for 18yrs. Plus a got a pyschology degree and a masters in hrm. Plus two kids a misses and a dog :-)

I'm not worried at all about the future, the worst that can happen is death and I've been there a few times with some damn fine recoveries and escapes. I grew up with nothing, no money, no food for 3days a week, no car, no hot water, no gas rofl Basically your typical Welsh 1970's valley life - in fact it was awesome :-) However I do like to be prepared for future changes and teach my kids life skils that so many of them lack today. So that's my interest in PO, I do, like many understand that PO and the lack of oil means the total collapse of the western world. But hey Thatcher was much harder to live through! I like looking at the other methods of living which I think are the ways we should have been doing things.

So I guess thats me and thats why I find this place so fascinating, its excellent and good to see that I'm not mad for not going out blasting my cash, getting into massive debt to impress my neighbours :-)

Anyhoots great place and I'm glad to be here ;-)

I first got interested in the idea of oil depletion when I saw the excellent History of Oil http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 2978336967

Searching the web and reading everything I could google ever since.

I must confess to being a bit of a survivalist and former military trained nutter. I'll try keep it clean.

It got me drinking and worrying, my wife advised that i go to AA, i thought that if i went to AA and told them why i was drinking and started talking about PO i would probably send the lot of them over a cliff.

ciao
Sorry to report that I laughed out loud at that observation.

Apparently alcohol sales increase in a recession, so this survivalist dude posted here recently http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QovBLFZhQME has got it worked out well.

Hi,

I've been reading threads on this forum for a month or so now & have decided I should register & say hello with my first post. :)

I found my way here while googling "communal living" & found myself reading a post about the possibility of setting up a community in Wales. I read round the rest of the site & learned very quickly about Peak Oil (a phrase I'd heard but not really understood before) and here I am. :D

I've always been interested in environmental issues so am well aware of climate change issues, love gardening (got our 1st allotment this spring) & have recently become interested in permaculture, and now Transition Towns - so peak oil seems a natural progression.

Preston's not the most progressive of places so I'm relying on you lot to keep me in touch & stop me feeling like a lone voice in the wilderness!!!

Yippee another Northerner!! It's lonely up here . . .

There was one PO meeting in Manchester ages ago, not been one since. Maybe we should try to get one going again. Anyone else up for it

Welcome to the forum Jackie!

Welcome Jackie. :)

I think meeting up with the like minded is great and sometimes feel a tad jealous of those living in London simply because they get together regularly.

I met up with Roger Adair and his family earlier this week. Really was worth all the diesel to get to Cambridge (he was over visiting family).

A bloke who sits next to me at work sent me a couple of links. It was the night after I had read 'An Inconvenient Truth'. I think he said something along the lines of 'you think climate change is inconvenient? Try this.'.......

It was at Navy College in 1974. A bearded lieutenant stopped talking about metallurgy or whatever the subject was and suddenly said "Of course this is all a load of nonsense because by the end of the century there is going to be hardly any oil left"

His advice was to get a place up in the hills and a shotgun, stock up on tins of beans and ammo.

So here I am (without the gun!)

I suppose beans and ammo alone could be a fairly potent deterrent . . .

Seriously . . . 1974, that's pretty good foresight!

1974 would be immedaitely after the Arab-Israeli war. An obvious conclusion for the time?

Anyway, I found out about PO last year when researching economic prospects over at DailyReckoning.com. Seems to me that most people accept that oil will run out at some point. What they don't appreciate is the imminent impact of the Hubbert peak on the worldwide economy, and the fact that renewables can't ever fill the increasing energy gap.

Looks like the $$$ doomers at DR were right about the credit crunch - maybe that'll delay peak for a while and buy some time for the debt-free to prepare.
