I saw this disturbing piece on worldwide food production,

Lowest Food Supplies in 50 or 100 Years: Global Food Crisis Emerging
http://www.organicconsumers.org/article ... e_5660.cfm

and it reminded me of an old song by Paul McCartney...

Too many people going underground,
Too many reaching for a piece of cake.
Too many people pulled and pushed around,
Too many waiting for that lucky break.

That was your first mistake,
You took your lucky break and broke it in two.
Now what can be done for you?
You broke it in two.

Too many people sharing party lines,
Too many people never sleeping late.
Too many people paying parking fines,
Too many hungry people losing weight.

I'm amazed that this thread is into its 4th page and no-one has mentioned Sieze The Day http://siezetheday.org
A truly radical folk-dance-rock group who live the words they sing. They've played most of the G8 and Climate events for the last few years but now have taken a no-fly pledge so are mostly UK bound.
They are the band who got manipulated out of the Radio 3 World Music Awards which they were winning because they submitted an anti-Iraq war song. They then crashed the event and wrote a 20 minute talking blues about the affair.
Fantastic live act - and well worth checking out. Many climate and oil related songs and lines. One of my favs is Because We Love Our Children on the newest album - its a deeply bitter-sweet ballard.
Sample:
- Which doesn?t leave much time for learning
How this little wheel we?re turning,
Earning dosh to buy those me-no-likee shoes,
Joins all the cog-wheels in progression,
Gearing down to where oppression
Grinds the kiddies we all pity on the news.

When from the sweet-shop to the sweat-shop?s
Just a two-hour Easy jet-stop
For the holiday our families deserve:
And though we know our world is sinking
From this fossil fuel we?re drinking,
Still we guess it?s their best interest we serve
Globalisation:
If you?re under water one morning, don?t blame it on global warming,
The hole in the sky is just a lie?icebergs are actually forming!
Pumping oil is green, that?s how we want it seen,
So I?ve changed the rules, to teach your schools my corporate American dream.

Chorus:
Globalisation, it?s a pirates life for me,
We?re fighting over each other for your dependency,
And as long as you go to war, whenever we want you to
You?ll have a tank full of petrol every morning.

We think we've come so far
On all our lies we depend
We see no consequence
This is the beginning of the end.
Couldn't agree more Haggis - this has become my theme song!

A few others:

* 'Rio Grande Blood' by Ministry. Al has taken samples of George W, and cut them to create a speach where he tells the truth!

And now a message from the President of the United States George W. Bush:
I've adopted sophisticated terrorist tactics
I'm a dangerous, dangerous man
With dangerous, dangerous weapons
I want to drain the coal resources in America
And foreign sources of crude oil.
I'm a weapon of mass destruction
I'm a brutal dictator
And I'm evil

* 'Only' by NIN reminds me of the moment when I finally 'got it' about peak oil, that sickening, top of the rollercoaster moment, just before the plunge:

Well the tiniest little dot caught my eye and it turned out to be a scab
And I had this funny feeling like I just knew it's something bad
I just couldn't leave it alone, I kept picking at the scab
It was a doorway trying to seal itself shut
But I climbed through

Now I am somewhere I am not supposed to be, and I can see things I know I really shouldn't see
And now I know why, now, now, now I know why
Things aren't as pretty
On the inside

There's so many good candidates for a peak oil song, that we should release a compilation album! You could intersperse the songs with segments from speaches by Heinberg, Kunstler and the gang! Wouldn't that be something... I could give it to my family as Christmas presents!!

Great to see this thread out of the back waters of the Suggestion Box area, and up here in General Discussion competing with all the doom and gloom!

(Nothin But) Flowers

Post by skeptik »

(Nothing But) Flowers
lyrics by David Byrne, from the album 'Naked' by The Talking Heads, 1988.

Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it's nothing but flowers

There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
you got it, you got it

We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner
we got it, we got it

There was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers
you've got it, you've got it

If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
you've got it, you've got it

Years ago
I was an angry young man
I'd pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With a beautiful highway
This used to be real estate
Now it's only fields and trees
Where, where is the town
Now, it's nothing but flowers
The highways and cars
Were sacrificed for agriculture
I thought that we'd start over
But I guess I was wrong

Once there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis
you got it, you got it

This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
you got it, you got it

I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
you got it, you got it

And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
you got it, you got it

I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
you got it, you got it

We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
you got it, you got it

This was a discount store,
Now it's turned into a cornfield
you got it, you got it

Don't leave me stranded here
I can't get used to this lifestyle

----------------------------

excellent album, by the way. Their last, sadly.

YES, YES, YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

This whole site admin post is really doing it for me!

Everyday I learn more about how much power I have around here

Every day I come in here I exterminate people, references, things and I am beginning to like it.....

ALOT

And now I find that people have started to ask me favours, and I can oblige them, ......if I want to........

And, Andy ( ) I also find that I can twist peoples words and posts and they don't even realise (take your first post and my slightly edited "quote"   )....

My favorite of the moment. More Billy Bragg....

In 1649
To St George's Hill
A ragged band they called the Diggers
Come to show the people's will
They defied the landlords
They defied the law
They were the dispossessed
Reclaiming what was theirs

'We come in peace' they said
'To dig and sow
We come to work the land in common
And to make the waste land grow
This earth divided
We will make whole
So it can be
A common treasury for all

The sin of property
We do disdain
No one has any right to buy and sell
The earth for private gain
By theft and murder
They took the land
Now everywhere the walls
Rise up at their command

They make the laws
To chain us well
The clergy dazzle us with heaven
Or they damn us into hell
We will not worship
The God they serve
The God of greed who feeds the rich
While poor men starve

We work, we eat together
We need no swords
We will not bow to masters
Or pay rent to the lords
We are free men
Though we are poor
You Diggers all stand up for glory
Stand up now

From the men of property
The orders came
They sent the hired men and troopers
To wipe out the Diggers' claim
Tear down their cottages
Destroy their corn
They were dispersed
But still the vision lingers on

You poor take courage
You rich take care
This earth was made a common treasury
For everyone to share
All things in common
All people one
We come in peace -
The order came to cut them down

I can definitely go with all the Jethro Tull, Bowie and Hawkwind. What great taste all you peak oilers have! On a sad note my suggestion is from This Mortal Coil with "I Come And Stand At Every Door"

We're bound to see somebody let off a few nuclear bombs at some point.

Always loved that Joan Baez song on Silent Running.

You are a goddess Pippa, you can rewrite history at a whim! We had best be careful not to incur your displeasure . . . !

 I'm scared!

p.s. what bribe would you accept for changing a couple of Vortex's posts so that he is advertising free accommodation to the city-centre unemployed?

Andy

Very funny, might create some mischief and havoc for Vortex, might not even need bribing. Do you think he would be cross? (moderately cross I can deal with, very cross - ummm - not so sure).
Just a thought but meddling in Vortex's business might be fun for now but it might back fire on me, what d'a think?!

Not sure that I need such trouble what with me now being such a vip etc, etc......

I feel confident that you will use your new powers wisely and without prejudice Pippa :D

Besides . . . just the threat hanging over our heads should be enough to keep us all in check

How about Joni Mitchell's "Electricity" - not sure it's strictly speaking peak oil related, but a great song nevertheless.

For a general end of the world sound with no lyrics the theme to 28 Days\Weeks later is quite atmospheric.
