I dont think we humans could burn oil any faster if we tried!
One thought about the airplane industry , as far as I understand it a % of a barrel of oil has to be kerosene.
In other words, when oil is down to 40 mpd from 85mpd , there still be a fixed % of that which will be kerosene.
So ironically we may still have the fuel in the future for a substantial amount of air travel in the future(although al lot less than today), even when there are shortages of all sorts of more important things everywhere!
