United States Presidential Election 2024

What can we do to change the minds of decision makers and people in general to actually do something about preparing for the forthcoming economic/energy crises (the ones after this one!)?

This is essentially a white supremacist / racist trope.
Namely, this land is 'ours' when in fact, the land historically belongs to Native Americans and everybody who arrived after that are immigrants...
I'm sure the Native Americans would love to deport all the Europeans, but it's just not possible....

Same situation in Australia with the Aboriginals....

In the UK for some reason you can't say it though because someone in parliament or the judiciary who was educated by Communists in the 1960s says so.

In the end countries are formed by the strongest ethnic groups or like, say Turkey or America or Australia formed by stronger invaders than the indigenous inhabitants. If Harris is elected the US will become, albeit slowly, another country with another dominant ethnic group or groups. With Trump that may be stopped. When I was studying in the US in 2006 there was a statistic that in the whole school system whites had become a minority that year. It's the same in London - only Havering had a majority of white children at the school system in the whole of East London. 40,000 Kurds and Afghans crossing the channel every year is going to have an effect on the ethnic make up of the UK.

It's not always whites who say that. The Burmese and Assamese say something similar when faced with Bangladeshi immigration and the Fijians say it when faced with growing numbers of Indians. I have had a Japanese say to me that any immigration of non-Japanese to Japan is not acceptable. It is probably human nature for every ethnic group to want to be dominant.

And yes there are American Indians who want to get rid of the whites and go back to hunter gathering I guess.

We'll find out in a few hours. In my opinion, the media and polling has been ridiculous for this election and rather than it being 'on a knife edge' etc, Harris is going to win fairly easily.

Over the course of the day, Trump's odd are shortening - suggesting more likely to win. I don't buy it.

Early results suggest a Trump win. Bur firstly note that the results released so far are only a small proportion of the total, and secondly, may not be an accurate sample of the wider electorate.

This is starting to look like a Trump landslide.
So far Trump has won 162 of the electoral college votes but Harris has only 62.
Or put another way, Trump needs only another 108 to win, whereas Harris needs over 200 more electoral college votes to win. Possible ? undoubtedly it is basic arithmetic, but not very likely.

Trump is ahead on the popular vote at the moment by a couple of million,, and has taken the first of the swing states, north Carolina. Also marginally ahead in some of the others. If Harris has more support in the larger, more urban areas, she may yet win, but I expect Trump to declare that he is president very soon .

Ah, egg on my face! His victory is an incredible political moment and leaves the UK very isolated.

I favoured him. Due mainly to his defiance at the attempts on his life, but also the democrats switching candidates late on.

Hard to see Harris winning now, Pennsylvania is getting away from her. She failed to get the big female vote over the abortion issue. She is only ahead in one of the five remaining swing states.

Trump has won by a couple of percent. He will try to rule as if it was 98%.

He is still a convicted felon, and facing charges that could see him jailed for years

I don't want to call it as there could some postal votes or err, forgotten about votes lying around somewhere, but I think Americans are staring into the abyss and thinking we are better with this guy who will at least try to stop the country changing, or being changed, in many ways (for the worse in my opinion). When I went to study in the US for a semester in 2006 I was surprised by the suspicion of a lot of the people. An effect of 911 possibly.

I think a lot of Red states defused the abortion issue by having referendums at the same time.

Starmer seems to have majorly screwed his policy up and even the Australian Labor Party are seeking former Liberal PM Scott Morrison's advice on how to deal with him. The Australian voters are going to deal with the ALP quite soon.

My only concern is about Ukraine.

It is certainly a pivotal moment, though I am not sure I understand why it will make a huge amount of difference to the UK. My first reaction is to wonder what the implications are for the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. As well as internally in the US.

Trump is in the pocket of the fossil industries. It will a be a disaster for the renewables transition in the US, and for the global environment. In the long run that is the only change that matters. It is bad news for Taiwan and in the US it is bad news for social infrastructure and life expectancy. It will accelerate the decline of the US as the global superpower as they will hit peak oil brick wall even harder.

China may not have the demographics to take the superpower top spot, but Li will be happy.

What happens In Ukraine depends on whether Trump or Putin dies first.

I agree that the US will hit a peak oil wall when their shale oil reserves get depleted. I approved of Biden on doing the Inflation Reduction Act. Pity he made it the same abbreviation as his favourite terrorist organisation. Maybe Elon Musk will persuade Trump on renewables who knows. Perhaps these North Koreans in Ukraine might swing Trump around.

Apparently Kamala has gone to bed without speaking to her supporters who have been waiting for her for hours - according to right wing news organisations anyway.

Has Trump even got a majority of the votes? Congress, Senate and the Supreme Court too?

Yes, president, senate, congress, supreme court. Even if Trump drops dead tomorrow the US has at least 4 years of elective dictatorship, and little sign that the Republicans are going to let mere elections get in the way of their future control of power.
