Which might not be such a bad thing?
Are these remaining specks of UK territory around the globe likely to be an asset or liability in the coming decades?

I could certainly live on Pitcairn, Saint Helena or Tristan da Cunha. Falklands might be a bit cold for me know but could have a lot of oil.
More the message that it sends that you are willing to give up territory because the UN committee says so and get countries like Russia and Argentine going. Also who might get the Pitcairn or TdC? Get too lax and Russia or China might end up with something. In the last resort they might be a good place to dump unwanted arrivals to the UK or site nuclear weapons or nuclear waste dumps.
If that attitude continues to its logical conclusion the people of Bradford might want to become an Emirate some time soon.

You ain't seen nothing yet. Wait till the Halloween budget. It's going to make the Liz Truss budget look like a sideshow if Reeves gets it wrong. So many rich people leaving (no tiny violins I guess) and so many boat people coming. I'm glad I'm in Estonia now ...at least for a while.UndercoverElephant wrote: ↑08 Oct 2024, 15:19 https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/l ... r-AA1rSJTV
That was a short honeymoon. If there was a GE now the result may well be a hung parliament.Labour’s polling lead has fallen to just one point after a rocky start to Sir Keir Starmer’s time in government.
The latest polling comes despite the prime minister attempting to draw a line under the disorder by accepting the resignation of his chief of staff Sue Gray.
The survey, conducted by More in Common for Politico, put Labour on 29 per cent and the Conservative Party on 28 per cent.
Reform UK was on 19 per cent, while the Lib Dems were on 11 per cent. The Green Party was at seven per cent, while the SNP was on two per cent.

Is that until in-valid's Russian friends come to "liberate" you and the Russian speakers of the country from the oppression of the Estonian government?Forever_Winter wrote: ↑11 Oct 2024, 19:45................... I'm glad I'm in Estonia now ...at least for a while.
Seriously though, I voted LibDem to get the local Tory out and give Labour a chance at government. I think that they deserve a bit longer to get used to the responsibilities of government. I think it is more than a bit cheeky for the Tories to complain about Labour taking a few backhanders.
There was a piece in the paper today about a comedy/satirical writer complaining about left wing comedians not taking Labour to task for their misdemeanours, which I think is justified. Have I Got News For You is especially notable in this regard.

The idea that the NHS is to be "reimagined" sounds quite ominous and the "consultation" proposed suggests a lack of any real ideas (or integrity). The idea to make it totally "paperless" sounds like a recipe for disaster considering the lamentable history of many government IT fiascos, most recently the Post Office Horizon system.kenneal - lagger wrote: ↑20 Oct 2024, 15:15

There is something extremely weird about the non linear reality space of Starmer and Streeting (and Milliband as well) that is hard to put your finger on.
None of this sort of stuff is new, as I am discovering reading about Blair and the New Labour project from the mid 90s onward with a growing morbid fascination and predict that the long discredited PFIs,in various guises, are going to make a stealthy return under a new upbeat moniker.

I guess that's always a possibility. I asked this question to some locals and they sort of just shrugged their shoulders and didn't seem to be too bothered. I could always go to the Czech Republic at a push but so far I've been really impressed with Estonia.
Back to Labour - what does everyone think of the story of some Labour activists going over to the US to campaign for Harris? Can you imagine the fallout for Starmer if Trump wins?
Re: Labour Party/government Watch
Wasn't aware that Labour activists are going over to the US to campaign for Harris - have you got a link to the story ?Forever_Winter wrote: ↑21 Oct 2024, 15:58 Back to Labour - what does everyone think of the story of some Labour activists going over to the US to campaign for Harris? Personally, I wouldn't be very keen on a Yank (or any other non-British person) trying to persuade me to vote one way or the other....
Imagine that Americans will feel exactly the same, so can't see it being very productive....
If true, assume this is being paid for by the Labour Party ?
If I was a member, not sure I'd be happy with my subs being used for that purpose...
Re: Labour Party/government Watch
I’d not heard about this either and while I’m no fan of Trump I don’t feel it’s the right thing to do .
There’s a number of links Times and Telegraph seem to be behind paywalls

South African Elon Musk is doing plenty to help Trump... at least he lives and works in the US. But yes it's a real mess, folk should really stay out of elections in other people's countries!
Re: Labour Party/government Watch
Trump has officially complained to the US election commission because members of the Labour party have gone to the US and are campaigning for Harris unpaid and in their own time. This appears to be legal in the US system. In previous elections members of the Tory party have campaigned for Republicans, eg GW Bush.
A handful of extra unpaid volunteers will be very marginal help to Harris, and another PR win for Trump when he puts in a complaint about foreign government interference.

Re: Labour Party/government Watch
What a spectacularly stupid idea, which Starmer has failed to respond to appropriately. He should have prohibited it and punished the Labour members who think it is appropriate. Just imagine American political activists coming here and trying to interfere in UK elections. It betrays the "we know best" mindset that was so prevalent all through the brexit campaign. "We, the political busybodies of Britain, with a grossly inflated view of our own political knowledge and intelligence, have come to educate you dumb Americans!"

Re: Labour Party/government Watch
Liz Truss, who has some connections to the Tory party and Nigel Farage, who also has some UK political associations have directly campaigned on behalf on of Trump in the past.
Objectively, what these Labour members look to have done isn't illegal, isn't new and isn't limited to Labour.

Starmer seems to be missing a political 'radar'....

You couldn't make this up. Starmer needs to nip this in the bud before this gets out of hand...
