Over 200 lives lost, with hundreds more missing.

Hurricane Kirk now heading straight for the UK. Won't be a hurricane by the time it reaches us next week (Wednesday?) but it according to the BBC weather for the week ahead it will be a direct hit and bring a lot of rain with it.

180mph now observed for hurricane Milton, putting it in the top 10 Atlantic storms in history - just 24 hrs ago it was barely a hurricane.

The forecast track takes it straight into Tampa Bay, with around 100 miles of coastline likely to see 12ft, 3.7m of storm surge. Some 3 million people live in the Tampa Bay area.

This storm, making landfall, Wednesday night, could be as impactful as Katrina.

How many increasingly serious hurricanes will it take before the majority of Americans start to believe in man made global warming ?
Or are hurricanes still the wrath of god, for permitting abortion, or even talking about so doing.

Hurricane shelters have saved many lives and are increasingly popular. In my view a hurricane shelter to an approved standard should be a legal requirement for all new homes in at risk areas and should be recommended for existing homes.

16 people???? That's almost standing room only! Hope it leaks because it would get pretty stuffy in there for the few hours that a hurricane would take to pass. And talking about passing, what about water and other things?

I would much prefer my cellar on the side of a hill well above any flood line.

The shelters do have limited ventilation openings, if reliant on such a shelter I would be inclined to leave the door slightly open initially to provide ventilation, only closing and securing the door at the last minute.
A battery powered fan that uses one of the existing openings could be a useful addition.

Food and water are not included, it being up to the user to stock these.

Seating and/or bunks can be added as required.

16 people would be very cramped, but better than being dead. If space and money permitted I would prefer a shelter designed for at least twice the number of persons in the household.
