Re: Ukraine Watch...
Apparently Russia is outspending NATO by 2 to 1 in the weapons department so hardly surprising to see Russian advances. What NATO needs to do is to send cost effective weapons that cause high casualties to Russia and keep the body count rising. Then focus on destroying high value and difficult to replace Russian weaponry and infrastructure. I'd be going for their electrical grid and railway bridges - things that take a long time to replace.
I'd like to see a million Russian dead by the end of this. This will deal a massive blow to Russia's future capabilities.
On another note I see that the pre-WW1 Russian naval ship Kommuna has been attacked.

Russia outspending NATO/ the US? Are you serious? A few seconds search of the internet ridicules that statement.BritDownUnder wrote: ↑22 Apr 2024, 22:44 Apparently Russia is outspending NATO by 2 to 1 in the weapons department so hardly surprising to see Russian advances. You want to see a million Russians dead. You sound like a nice guy :-/
I’d rather we’d managed to avoid anyone’s death
Re: Ukraine Watch...
Whatever you think of BDUs morals that is current Ukrainian tactics, ably assisted by Russia, who send in waves of cannon fodder troops, to flush out Ukrainian positions, so their professional troops can then target their artillery and finish them off. The cannon fodder are mostly from the non European Russian ethnicities, the elite white Russians are mostly protected.
Ukraine before this current invasion was moving much closer to democracy, cutting down on corruption, according to the refugees I have spoken to. The US, of course, has been going in the other direction for decades.
The BBC has formally identified 50000 dead Russians, but the real figure will be two or three times that, and seriously wounded probably as much again

Re: Ukraine Watch...
Russians threaten millions of British dead most nights on their prime time TV programs. Just sending back a bit of their own rhetoric.
I doubt they'll get to a million dead as they will have a revolution before that. Happy to keep them busy until then.
The spending amount was what I heard on the net. Maybe they are putting value to dead Russians, sunken ships, destroyed tanks, care of permanent disabilities in former combatants and their reduced economic potential etc etc. It soon mounts up. When their demographics starts getting altered like it was in WW2 is when they will stop and they will permanently weakened as a result and less of a threat to the rest of the world.
I hear they are getting a bit worried about Kazakhstan showing some independent thoughts. Looks like Armenia has left the fold and Russians are withdrawing from the Caucasus. Armenia was a liability anyway and will be to France or whoever steps in.

You are not learning from history. After all Hitler only wanted to reoccupy the Rhineland and have Sudetenland. Very reasonable man lots of people said.
Then Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Denmark.......

Well that’s refreshing. I’m usually accused of being a Russian troll.

Do you still insist, for example, that this will end with Russia forced back to the 2014 borders?

Re: Ukraine Watch...
It is you who is finding difficult resolving your experience of reality with that of other people, not me. There is also nothing wrong with changing your mind, especially if your initial opinion was clearly qualified with "this is how it looks to me" and "I don't have a crystal ball, so this is my best guess". And if you think being intellectually honest enough to change one's opinion in the light of new facts to be "bleating" then you are a first class idiot.Default0ptions wrote: ↑23 Apr 2024, 22:33Well UE, your reality is somewhat compromised by your bleating that you’ve “now changed your mind”.UndercoverElephant wrote: ↑23 Apr 2024, 22:14Ralph's reality looks very much like mine, strangely enough.Default0ptions wrote: ↑23 Apr 2024, 21:46

I repeat: it is you, not I, who holds the minority view around here. Pretending otherwise will get you nowhere. Neither will misquoting me. I never "insisted" anything of the sort. Attempting to rewrite history doesn't work, whether the history you are attempting to rewrite is of my previous posts, or the world in general.Do you still insist, for example, that this will end with Russia forced back to the 2014 borders?

In the 1930s a lot of British intellectuals thought that Russia under Stalin was a socialist paradise, right up to the day they went and saw it for themselves.

Re: Ukraine Watch...
A lot longer than that ! I was taught at school in the 1970s that russia was a socialist paradise, and that we should be glad of their unswerving fight for peace. I was told off for asking "what is the berlin wall for ? is it to keep them in, or to keep us out ?" it was of course to keep us out, lest the workers paradise became over-run !

UE: “ I repeat: it is you, not I, who holds the minority view around here.”
I don’t know why you think that has any bearing on the matter. The majority view was once that the earth was flat and the sun and stars revolved around it.
“There is also nothing wrong with changing your mind, especially if your initial opinion was clearly qualified with "this is how it looks to me" and "I don't have a crystal ball, so this is my best guess"”
You don’t so much change your mind as move the goalposts. And your best guess was wrong, wasn’t it.
The general trajectory of the situation continues to be along the lines that I proposed it would be.
I didn’t need a crystal ball to see that.
Things will turn out as they do.

Re: Ukraine Watch...
It has a direct bearing on the matter, since the matter in question is your ludicrous claim that you understand what is going on in this war, and the rest of the board doesn't.Default0ptions wrote: ↑24 Apr 2024, 22:17 UE: “ I repeat: it is you, not I, who holds the minority view around here.”

That is a myth. It was never true. The majority view was once that the earth was flat
They aren't "goalposts" at all. This is not my war and I don't have any goals. And yes my best guess at a particular time about a particular thing was wrong. Whoopie-do! Why do you think this is interesting?“There is also nothing wrong with changing your mind, especially if your initial opinion was clearly qualified with "this is how it looks to me" and "I don't have a crystal ball, so this is my best guess"”
You don’t so much change your mind as move the goalposts. And your best guess was wrong, wasn’t it.
If you were true to your own claims, then you'd never make any predictions at all about anything which cannot be predicted with the laws of physics. The whole of human affairs is dependent on individual human choices and things which can't be accurately predicted because of the chaotic nature of the systems involved. That means if you make predictions about things then sometimes you are going to be wrong. So f***ing what? Welcome to reality.
More rubbish. The pendulum of momentum has swung back and forth, largely dependent on the level of support from Washington, which has now approved a $61bn aid package. How much difference will this make I don't know, and neither do you.The general trajectory of the situation continues to be along the lines that I proposed it would be.
And you will continue to think it is appropriate to continually personalise discussions in order to attempt to piss people off so much they leave the debate. Well, it hasn't worked. I will continue to attempt to make predictions about all sorts of things, and continue to change my mind in the light of changing facts. And the whole board will continue to expose your own position on this war as a load of fantastical nonsense.Things will turn out as they do.
