The majority of posters on this site are either predictably petite bourgeois with all of the predictable world views that implies. Or, this site itself is just one more of the many ruling class spook operated shill outposts online. Which would at least be hilarious if true. Sadly, it's probably the former.

I disagree. I’ve been following discussions on this forum for many years and have read through many of the threads from their very beginnings. I value and respect the opinions of the core community of long term contributors to Powerswitch and find their informed and intelligent input extremely valuable in many areas.

I do obviously have an opinion on the Ukraine issue that may appear to be at variance with the consensus here - but I appreciate the fact that, despite some initial knee-jerk assumptions that I should be banned as a ‘Russian troll’, we are all still discussing the issue and are reasonably tolerant of sometimes opposing viewpoints.

I suspect that the majority of the American people, and the majority of their elected politicians, support Ukraine and are in favour of sending military and other aid to Ukraine.
The recent votes in congress AGAINST such aid are reported as being due to internal political differences. In particular some elected representatives want stronger action to protect the Mexican border from illegal immigration. Until this is achieved they intend to block further aid for Ukraine.

Eventually I expect that a deal will be done regarding Mexican border security, and those representatives who have opposed aid for Ukraine will then support such aid.

Yes. It is an internal US political squabble very much like the ones which shut down the activities of federal employees every now and then because of wrangling over budgets. The only way I can see that the US stops supporting Ukraine is if Trump wins.

Mr Putin said that "there will be peace [in Ukraine] when we achieve our objectives". Those "objectives do not change", he said, listing "denazification, demilitarisation and its neutral status". These are themes he has highlighted from the start of the war.

That is why this war cannot be brought to any sort of "normal" ending with a stalemate at the Dnipro river, even if that ends up being the de-facto military situation. For Ukraine to agree to that, membership of NATO would have to be part of the deal. Otherwise there would be no point in agreeing to peace and accepting the territorial loss, because there's no reason for Russia to respect the deal. From the Russian POV, grabbing territory in the south while the rest of Ukraine joins NATO is an almost total failure to achieve its war aims. So this situation would either lead to a second war a few years later, or a long-term "frozen war" like Korea.

It could be a long road ,Turkey have been candidates since 1999, North Macedonia since 2005, Montenegro since 2010, Serbia since 2012, Albania since 2014 etc, according to Wikipedia.

Interesting that Orban backed down after all his bluster.
